Tigers Sweep Alabama A&M in Home Opener

NASHVILLE --- Tennessee State volleyball got back in the winning column with a 3-0 sweep of Alabama A&M Tuesday afternoon in Kean Hall. This is the second time this season the Tigers have swept the Bulldogs.

Julia Pierson led TSU with nine kills while Cherlie Adorno-DeJesus finished the match with 15 digs. Puamana Danielson dished out 26 assists in the contest.

The Tigers (5-5) won the opening set by a score of 25-8 behind an all-around team effort. Four players including Taylor Patterson, Puamana Danielson, Katora Roberts and Payten Clark had a perfect hitting percentage in the first set. Danielson distributed the ball evenly and the team had a total hitting percentage of .444 in the opening stanza.

TSU had another strong offensive performance in the second frame. The squad started on a 10-0 run before Alabama A&M called the first timeout of the set. The Bulldogs answered with a 7-1 rally but the Tigers finished set two off strong to win 25-12. Chloe Watson had four kills in the set.

Alabama A&M made some adjustments and came out strong in the third stanza. The Bulldogs established a 6-5 lead and held onto it until the Tigers tied the score at 14-all. The set would include eight ties and four lead changes. Down the stretch, a hitting error by A&M sealed its fate and TSU won set three 25-20. Five players for Tennessee State had five or more kills.

The Tigers will resume play Friday Sept. 16 in the Scenic City Showdown against Ole Miss.
