NASHVILLE --- Tennessee State suffered a pair of losses to Jacksonville State on Sunday at Tiger Field. JSU improved to 30-9, 9-1 in Ohio Valley Conference play, by shutting out TSU 7-0 and 8-0. The Tigers dropped to 9-25 on the season and 1-9 in the OVC.
The Tigers had runners reach in each of the first six innings in the opener, but could not push a runner past second base. Danica Gleason, Patton Akers, Lauren Woodard, Selena Crafton and Erica O'Kane all collected hits against JSU ace, Whitney Gillespie.
O'Kane registered the lone extra base for the Tigers on the day with a double down the leftfield line in the sixth inning of game one.
The Tigers biggest threat came in the second inning when Emma Colegrove and Woodard earned back-to-back one out walks. Gillespie (14-3) shut down the Tiger rally with two of her seven strike outs on the game.
JSU picked up the win scoring seven runs, five earned, off starter Lauren Powell. The sophomore dropped to 4-10 after surrendering 10 hits and four walks, while fanning three in 5.1 innings.
Amanda Cabrera tossed the final 1.2 innings, striking out two and gave up a hit and a walk.
In the nightcap, JSU needed five innings to claim the win behind the arm of pitcher Taylor West. The Gamecock hurler tossed a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts. The perfect game attempt was broken up in the fourth inning as Gleason reached on a throwing error.
Woodard (2-8) was tagged with the loss after being touched for eight runs, five earned, on 10 hits and a walk in five innings of duty.
TSU step out of conference play as they travel to Knoxville, Tenn. to face No. 17 Tennessee for a doubleheader on Tuesday evening.
