Volleyball Loses to Austin Peay on Friday, 3-0

NASHVILLE- The Tennessee State University Tigers (9-9, 1-8 OVC) fell to the Austin Peay Governors in straight sets 25-18, 25-19 and 25-23 in Ohio Valley Conference action from Nashville. The loss is the eighth in a row in conference play and the fourth during the current five game homestand.

FIRST SET: APSU 25-18

Austin Peay starting the set out with the first two points, but a service error by Brooke Moore put TSU on the board. The Govs stretched the lead to 4-1 but a kill by freshman Storm White gave TSU the serve back. Austin Peay made the score 10-5 on a Kendall Washington attack error. TSU was able to cut the lead to 16-14 on a kill by freshman Aleksandra Rojecka but the Governors made a 4-0 run to take a 20-15 lead.

Austin Peay gained the momentum back and forced a TSU timeout on a kill by Kaylah Jackson to make the score 22-17. After the timeout, a kill by TSU senior Aniya Williams cut the lead to 22-18 but that was as close as the Tigers could get, as the Governors finished the set off on a Mion Weldon attack error.
 
SECOND SET: APSU 25-19

This set it was TSU's turn to gain the early advantage scoring the first two points. It was the first lead for the Tigers in the match. TSU stretched the lead to 5-2 on an attack error by APSU's Maggie Keegan. The Governors tied the score at five on a kill by Jackson. After TSU went up 7-5, Austin Peay's Marlayna Bullington tied the score at seven on a service ace. The teams then went back and forth. With the Tigers up 11-10, Austin Peay went on a 5-0 run to make the score 15-10. A kill by Williams gave TSU the serve back. Austin Peay continued the run making it 7-1 forcing TSU to call a timeout with the score at 17-12.

The Tigers scored the first two points after the timeout, but the Governors regained the momentum and went up 21-14 on a block assist by Maggie Keenan and Jaida Clark forcing TSU to call another timeout. A Brooks kill made it set point for the Governors, then a kill by Clark gave Austin Peay the set.

THIRD SET: APSU 25-23

After getting the first point of the set, TSU then extended the lead to 3-1 on an attack error by APSU's Jackson. APSU knotted the score at five on a Bullington service ace. After a back and forth between the two teams. APSU's Moore gave her team a two-point lead with a service ace. The Governors kept it rolling extending the run to 5-0 making the score 13-8 forcing TSU to call a timeout.

After the timeout, APSU extended the lead to 15-9 on a Moore kill. TSU then chipped away at the lead making it 15-11 on a Weldon kill. Austin Peay wouldn't let up, keeping the Tigers from getting within four points until a Williams kill made it 20-17. The Tigers then chipped the lead to two points at 21-19 on a Jackson attack error. Senior Sofia Garcia-Guerrios cut the lead to 24-23 on a sweet over the shoulder kill. After a Jackson kill made it set point for APSU, TSU cut the lead to one once again on a Rojecka kill but couldn't get over the hump falling on a kill by APSU's Clark.
