Aria Holmes and
Mion Weldon combined for 20 kills, but it was not enough as the Tennessee State University Tigers (9-12, 1-11 OVC) fell to the Murray State University Racers (12-9, 6-5 OVC) in straight sets (25-22, 27-25 and 25-15). The loss was the ninth in a row for the Tigers.
Murray setter Bailey Demier was huge again tonight with 35 assists to lead the Racers.
FIRST SET: Murray 25-22
TSU ran out to a 3-1 lead to start the match. Murray then went on a 7-1 run fueled by four kills by Brooke Watts during the run. TSU then tied the score at eight on consecutive service aces by junior
Sofia Garcia-Guerrios. After Murray's Dahlia Miller converted on a kill, the Tigers got rolling again scoring five of the next six points to go up 13-10. A kill by Murray's Jayla Holcombe made it 13-11, but TSU scored the next three points to extend their lead to 16-11.
Murray started mounting their comeback, scoring the next three points to cut the lead to 16-14. A Watts attack error stopped the Racer run, but they then scored six straight points to take a 20-17 lead. Murray's Alexa Harris had three aces during the run. The Tigers didn't go down easily, scoring four of the next five points to tie the score at 21. All four points came on Racer attack errors. The Racers got their footing back on the strength of two straight kills by Watts. TSU's Holmes kill made it 23-21 but it was as close as the Tigers could get. Murray finished the set off on kills by Watts and Holcombe. Both kills were assisted by Demier.
SECOND SET: Murray 27-25
TSU came out on a mission taking a 6-3 lead on the strength of four assists by senior
Kristian Marshall (16 assists) and service aces by junior
Carla Boudal and Garcia-Guerrios. Not to be outdone, the Racers went on a 4-0 run to go up 7-6. TSU wrestled the lead back on two straight Murray errors. The Racers went on another 4-0 run to make it 11-8. The Tigers then tied the score at 11. The teams then traded points with Murray being the first to 15 on a kill by Becca Fernandez.
With the score tied at 16, Murray went on a 3-0 run to take a 19-16 lead. The Tigers wouldn't give up, going on a 6-2 lead to take a 22-21 lead. Boudal had two kills during the run. A Weldon kill on an assist by Marshall gave TSU set point at 24-23. After the Racers tied it up, Holmes converted on a kill to give TSU set point once again. The point came on Marshall's 10
th assist of the set. Demier then assisted on two straight Murray kills to make it set point. A Holmes attack error gave the Racers the set.
THIRD SET: 25-15
After the tough loss in the second set, TSU came out on a roll scoring the first four points. Murray woke up and scored the next five points to go up 5-4. A Weldon kill made it a 3-0 TSU run to make the score 7-5 Tigers. Harris then tied the score for the Racers on a kill and service ace. After a Williams kill made the TSU lead at 8-7, Murray went on a 4-0 run to make it 11-8 Racers. TSU clawed back and cut the lead to 13-12 on a Williams kill but that was as close as the Tigers could get.
Murray took control of the match scoring the next five points, then followed up on a 4-0 run to make the score 22-14. Fueled by three Demier assists, the Racers closed out the match giving them their fourth victory in a row.
