NASHVILLE — Freshman
Gia Adams had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds and head coach
Ty Evans picked up his first win as a Tiger in a 94-48 victory over Fisk on Tuesday evening at the Gentry Center.
It was a disappointing first season for Evans, but with a new roster of transfers and true freshmen, TSU got off on the right foot to start the season in front of the home crowd.
The Lady Tigers finished with five players in double figures with graduate transfer
Tatyana Davis right behind Adams with 16 points and four assists.
Kianni Westbrook added 12 points and seven rebounds in her first appearance in a TSU uniform after two seasons at Daytona State. Sophomore
Elise Harden (12 points) and graduate student
Alexis Pierce (11 points) rounded out TSU double figure scorers.
In the wire-to-wire win, TSU opened up an sizable advantage early in the contest as the newcomers showed the Gentry Center faithful what they have to offer. Adams gave the Tigers a 14-7 lead after a 3-pointer from the wing with 6:29 left in the quarter. From that point, TSU went on a 14-0 run and led 28-11 at the end of the first quarter.
Fisk showed more poise in the second quarter, but TSU detailed that and increased its lead to 20 points on a Harden fast break layup towards the end of the frame. Fisk ended the half on a 10-4 run but still trailed 45-32 at the turn.
In the second half, TSU defense kicked in and allowed only 16 total points, eight per quarter, while scoring at least 22 points in both periods.
Zipporah Davis led Fisk with 17 points and Maya Langham had 10 points.
TSU finished the contest shooting 51 percent from the field and knocked down eight triples. The team scored 54 points from inside the paint and got 34 points from its bench.
The Lady Tigers hit the road for games at Georgia State (Friday, 10 a.m.) and Kansas (Sunday, 2 p.m.).
