NASHVILLE --- Tennessee State battled to the final out before falling just short in its Ohio Valley Conference finale against SIUE at Tiger Field on Friday. The Tigers comeback efforts fell short, as the Cougars held on for a 4-3 victory.
The pitching duo of
Lauren Powell and
Raven Loveless were solid on the day as they scattered eight hits and four walks as they surrendered just one earned run.
Powell was touched for two runs, both unearned, and was tagged with the loss, falling to 2-4 on the season.
The Cougars scored two runs in the first to take the early lead and answered each time the Tigers try to respond.
Kayli Mothershed drove a two-out triple down the right field line in the bottom of the second inning. Mothershed crossed home plate a batter later on a single by
Peyton Fointno. The run brought TSU back to within one at 2-1.
Trailing 3-1, Mothershed delivered in the fourth with an RBI double to drive in
Renae Spears. The 3-2 score would not last to long as SIUE picked up an unearned run off Loveless in the top of the fifth.
The Tigers threatened once again in their final at bats as
Marisa Mauroschadt doubled and
Bri Vire singled to give the Big Blue runners on the corner. A sacrifice fly to centerfield by
Savanah Wallace pushed Mauroschadt across the plate and brought TSU within one at 4-3. That;s as close as the Tigers would get as they dropped to 1-5 in OVC play.
GAME 3
- SIUE scored two unearned runs off starter Lauren Powell in the first inning.
- Raven Loveless spelled Powell after four batters and kept SIUE close allowing a run in the third and an unearned run in the fifth.
- With two outs in the second inning, Kayli Mothershed drove a ball into the right field corner for a triple.
- The catcher put TSU on the board as Peyton Fointno legged out an infield single.
- In the fourth, Renae Spears led off with a single and scampered around the bases on a Mothershed double to left.
- The Tigers tried to get closer in the fifth as Bri Vire walked and moved to third on a Savanah Wallace single.
- The threat came to an end as Spears' hard line drive to short turned into a double play as the Cougars caught Vire off of third.
- In the seventh, Marisa Maroschadt hammered a ball to left field for a one out double.
- Vire followed with a single to move Mauroschadt, who had to avoid the drive up the middle, to third.
- Wallace hit a sacrifice fly to center giving Mauroschadt time to score, making the score 4-3.
- The Cougars would capture the win a batter later and tagged Powell (2-4) with the loss.
- Vire, Mothershed and Fointno each recorded two hits a piece.

- Kayli Mothershed notched the first triple of her career.
- Anayah Baker-Rowell struck the ball well on the day, but finished 0-for-4, ending her streak of reaching bases at 12.
- The Tigers collected their seventh triple of the season.
- The 2020 unit totaled three triples in 18 games; four more games the the 2021 team has played this year.
- The current squad is two away from entering the top ten in team history.
