NASHVILLE- Senior Kendall Washington had a team high 11 kills and junior Sofia Garcia-Guerrios had 32 assists as the Tennessee State University Tigers (9-3, 1-2 OVC) defeated Southeast Missouri State University (10-4, 1-1 OVC) The series match score was 25-22, 25-17, 17-25 and 25-22. The victory gave TSU a split in the weekend series.Â
"I was very proud of the way we bounced back today," said TSU head coach Donika Sutton. "I told them to hold their heads high and be proud of how we finished on Friday. Today we were more focused and executed with efficiency."
In Friday's matchup, TSU won the first set but played flat in the second and third sets. This time, the Tigers won the first set and controlled the second set 25-17 to take a commanding lead. SEMO wouldn't give up forcing a fourth set with a 25-17 set win. Not to be outdone, TSU took the final set 25-22 to get their first home victory and their first conference victory of the season.Â
Williams led TSU with 13 points. Senior Aniya Williams continued her strong play chipping on 11.5 points. Senior Gina Rivera-Ortiz, the reigning OVC Defensive Player of the Week, contributed 26 digs. Garcia-Guerrios added 17 digs.Â
"We are learning to win and more importantly how to fight together," added Sutton. "It was great to split and now move on to prepare for Tennessee Tech."Â
TSU will go on the road to take on Tennessee Tech next Friday and Saturday before starting a five game homestand.Â
