MOREHEAD, Ky. —
Tatyana Davis continues her impressive offensive performances in OVC play and led the Tennessee State women's basketball team to a 58-34 win over Morehead State on Saturday afternoon.
The win moves Tennessee State to 2-0 in the OVC and a 7-6 overall mark. This is the first time the Lady Tigers have started league play undefeated since the 2014-15 season under then-head coach Larry Joe Inman when the team advanced to their NCAA Tournament. The win gives TSU its seventh victory, which is the most total wins this early in the calendar since the 1994-95 team under the direction of former coach and AD
Teresa Phillips. That team won seven of its first eight games plus its first two OVC contests, en route to a 22-7 margin and TSU's second appearance in the NCAA Tournament. With a win next Thursday against UT Martin, TSU has a chance to win its first three-straight OVC games since the 1993-94 season when the team won four consecutive to begin conference play. That season culminated with TSU's first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament under Phillips.
Davis led the squad with 17 points on 7-of-13 from the field in 23 minutes. The Toledo graduate knocked down 3-of-6 from downtown.
Gia Adams added 12 points and had an all-around performance with three rebounds, three assists, two steals, and one block.
Sierra McCullough pulled down a season-high 12 rebounds even though Morehead State outbattled TSU on the glass (46-38).
TSU led 25-19 at the turn.
Dominique Claytor and Adams combined for half of the lady Tigers' points with six each.
The visitors turned up the heat in the second half thanks in part to Davis' seven-point third quarter attack and led 37-26 after 30 minutes of play.
In the fourth quarter, TSU pressed on and outscored Morehead State 21-7. The Lady Tigers led their largest lead of 24 (56-32) with 1:29 remaining.
Playing shorthanded with just eight active players, Jada Claude led the Lady Eagles with nine points. Tennessee State forced 25 turnovers and came away with 11 steals.
The Lady Tigers return home for a 1 p.m. contest on Thursday, Jan. 6 against in-state rival UT Martin. The game can be seen live on ESPN+. The SkyHawks are currently 4-9 overall and 1-1 in the OVC. UT Martin fell to SIUE on Saturday after defeating Austin Peay last Thursday.
