Efficient Offense from Davis Not Enough as Tigers fall to UT Martin 3-2

NASHVILLE, TN --Kennedy Davis collected 16 kills with a .500 hitting percentage, but the Tennessee State volleyball team fell in five sets (24-26, 21-25, 25-23, 25-19, 11-15) to the UT Martin Skyhawks Tuesday at home at Kean Hall Gymnasium.

The loss dropped TSU's record to 8-13 overall and 2-6 in OVC play.

The Tigers offense was paced by Davis, who finished with 16 kills on the day while accumulating a hitting percentage of .500. Celestial Miller added 16 and Johanna Alcantara chipped in with 11 as part of a Tiger attack that had four players with double-digit kills. Defensively, TSU had two players reach double figures in digs as Gina Rivera-Ortiz had 25 and Hadley Pride had 10.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Tigers dropped a close first set, losing 26-24 in a game that was tied nine times and had three lead changes.

SET 2 | A 25-21 set-two loss put Tennessee State in a 2-0 hole in the match. The Tigers fell behind on the first point and fought from behind the rest of the way before dropping the set.

SET 3 | After falling in sets one and two, Tennessee State rallied to win set three and make it a 2-1 match. The Tigers scored first and never trailed in the set to earn a 25-23 victory. Tennessee State opened up as much as a nine point lead at 10-1 before finishing off the set, totaling 16 kills along the way. Tennessee State's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four UT Martin attacks in the stanza.

SET 4 | Tennessee State then kept the comeback train rolling, winning the fourth set 25-19 to bring the match level at two sets apiece. A solid performance on the attacking side led the Tigers to victory in the set. Tennessee State put together a .350 attack percentage with 20 kills in the set win. The Tigers ended on a strong note, stretching their lead to its largest point in the set to finish out the stanza.

SET 5 | TSU dropped the first two sets, but rallied to tie it at two sets apiece before falling 15-11 in the fifth set. In spite of pinpoint serving, the Lady Tigers dropped the fifth set. Tennessee State recorded three aces in the set loss.

Next up your Tigers will be back on the road as they will travel to St. Charles, Missouri to take on Lindenwood.
