Balanced Attack Fuels Tigers to Road Win

SAINT CHARLES, MO --The Tennessee State Tiger volleyball team beat the Lindenwood (MO) Lions in four sets (25-20, 25-13, 24-26, 25-21) Friday on the road at Robert F Hyland Arena. It was the first road OVC victory of the season for TSU. 

The victory moved the Tigers' record to 9-13 overall and 3-6 in OVC play.

Aleksandra Rojecka finished with 10 kills on the day to lead the Tiger offense. Rojecka, Celestial Miller and Kennedy Davis had 10.5 points apiece.  Defensively, had two players reach double figures in digs as Gina Rivera-Ortiz had 18 and Sofia Garcia-Guerrios had 14 to go with her 16 assists to give her a double-double. From the front row, Kennedy Davis contributed five blocks. Head coach Donika Sutton was happy with her team's overall effort, and how tough a balanced attack is on opponents.

"We have been firing on all cylinders which makes it extremely tough," said Sutton. "It puts a lot of pressure on the defense because you don't know who our go to hitter is."

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Tigers opened up an early one set to none lead, winning the first set 25-20. Tennessee State grabbed the advantage for good at 16-15 in a set that showcased four lead changes before the Lady Tigers took over in the second half of the stanza.

SET 2 | Tennessee State won set two 25-13 to promptly take a 2-0 lead. The Tigers grabbed control of the set lead early on at 6-5 and never looked back. Tennessee State led by as many as 12 points at 23-11 before finishing off the set. An 11-1 run late in the set was the difference, TSU swung at at .571 clip and forced eight errors. 

SET 3 | Tennessee State saw its chance for a 3-0 win end when Lindenwood (MO) took the third set. The Tigers dropped a tight set, losing 26-24 in a stanza that was tied five times and had two lead changes. With TSU up 22-17, Lindenwood fought back going on an 11-2 run to close the set. 

SET 4 | Tennessee State then responded to close out the match with a 25-21 set-four victory. The Tigers took a 5-0 lead fueled by Garcia-Guerrios' two aces and two kills.and never looked back in the set to secure the victory. Tennessee State opened up as much as a seven point lead at 9-2 before finishing off the stanza. Tennessee State also supplemented their offense with three aces in the set.

Next up: TSU will finish the road trip with a 2 pm matinee at Lindenwood.
