MURRAY, Ky. – The Tennessee State football team dropped its first Ohio Valley Conference game of the season as they fell 19-3 to Murray State on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops TSU to 3-5 (2-1 OVC).
Scoreless through the first 26 minutes of play, Tennessee State put together a nine-play 63-yard drive that resulted in a 25-yard field goal from
Kaleb Mosley to give TSU the lead with 4:04 remaining in the second quarter. Murray State would respond with a scoring drive of their own, resulting in a five-play 75-yard drive that resulted in six points. MSU took a 6-3 lead into the break and did not look back in the second half as they put together three scoring drives.
Despite the loss, TSU outgained MSU in total offense as the Tigers accumulated 323 total yards to the Racers' 283 yards. MSU had a solid rushing attack all afternoon, posting 194 yards and two scores on the ground to TSU's 77 rushing yards. TSU won the battle through the air posting 246 yards, while the Tennessee State defense only allowed 89 yards in the passing game. MSU quarterbacks only completed eight passes on the afternoon.
Draylen Ellis finished 20-of-34 with 230 yards and one pick through the air.
Jalen Rouse led the TSU ground attack with 84 yards.
JJ Holloman hauled in nine passes for 94 yards, while
Da'Shon Davis and
Karate Brenson both had three grabs.
K'Vaughan Pope and
Jahsun Bryant both tallied 11 tackles to lead the Tiger defense, while
Terray Jones finished with eight tackles. Bryant also finished with two tackles for loss.
The Tigers will be back in action on November 5, as they are set to host SEMO. Kickoff from Nissan is slated for 5:00 p.m.
