NASHVILLE — Special teams are known as the third phase in football. Having a productive offense and a stingy defense are two keys to obtaining victory. At most HBCUs, the kicking game is usually an afterthought. You find more returners than kickers making it to the NFL. For the Tennessee State Tiger team, having a good return game is important but they also have a great kicker/punter in senior
Kaleb Mosley.
In his first four seasons, Mosley was the punter and kickoff man. Last season he earned a spot on the 2021 Punter of the Year Watchlist. That season, he played in all 11 games and punted 62 times for 2,548 yards averaging 41 yards per punt. His longest punt of the season went for 61 yards and recorded 10 punts of 50+ yards. Mosley landed 15 punts inside of the 20 only recording four touchbacks.
This year, Mosley has been called upon to be a placekicker. So far this season, he has earned the Ohio Valley Conference Specialist of the Week honors. His first honor came against Lane College. He finished 2-of-2 on field goal attempts, including a career-long 51-yard field goal with 14 seconds left in the game to tie the score at 20 and sent the game into overtime. Mosley connected on a 35-yard field goal in the second quarter and finished 3-of-3 on extra point attempts. Mosley punted twice averaging 41 yards per punt.
His second award came in the Homecoming victory against Eastern Illinois, he was a perfect 3-of-3 with three 40+ yard field goals (42, 42, 46). Mosley connected on all four of his extra-point attempts on his way to scoring a season-high 13 points. He also had four punts for an average of 40.75 with a long of 53 yards.
As the Tigers fight for a chance to win an OVC championship, look for Mosley to be a key.
