NASHVILLE- As the old saying goes; "Defense wins championships". For the Tennessee State Tiger Volleyball Team, their defense has carried them most of the season. TSU leads the OVC in conference play in total blocks (145.5), blocks per set (2.62) and they are second in opponent hitting percentage (.171).

The Tigers went into the season with arguably the best defender in the conference in libero Gina Rivera-Ortiz who has shattered the Tiger dig record. But Coach Donika Sutton has a another defensive weapon at her disposal, freshman Gabrielle Johnson.

"For a freshman to come in and lead the conference in blocks is impressive," said Sutton. "We knew that she had the athletic ability, but her instincts are what makes her good at the net. Sky is the limit for her. She has worked hard to be a weapon for us."

That weapon has come on strong since conference play started. Of her 100 total blocks this season, 75 have come against OVC opponents. Her personal high came in a five-set loss at Morehead State with 16 rejections. In that game, she had 10 kills, giving her a double-double. Playing the middle block can be challenging. Johnson's growing confidence on defense has helped her on offense.

"I came in a defensive middle, but coach has asked me to be aggressive on the offensive in as well," said Johnson." When you score on the block, it really pumps the team up. My confidence is very high now. I am glad that I am helping us win."

Johnson's road to TSU is one of a full circle. She was born in Nashville but moved to Houston in the fifth grade. She chose TSU because she still has family members In Nashville. She also loves the environment on campus, including home games at Kean Hall.

"It's a big help when we play at home. Some of the students ask when our next game is. The music, the dancing, the chants all that makes it fun. I love my teammates and my coaches. Our goal is to win a championship. We are headed in the right direction."

The Tigers will be back in action with a weekend road series against Southern Indiana on November 5 and 6.
