NASHVILLE – The Tennessee State softball team will travel to College Station, Tx. for the Reveille Classic hosted by Texas A&M. The rest of the field includes No. 11 Oklahoma State and Texas Southern.
Get to Know Tennessee State (5-4, 0-0 OVC): Tennessee State hosted the Roar City Invitational last weekend and picked up two wins Miami (OH) and IUPUI. On Sunday against IUPUI, the Tigers avenged their loss from Friday afternoon (2-0, IUPUI) with a run-rule victory, 9-0, in five innings.
Caitlyn Manus tossed her second shutout of the season as the freshman right-hander has allowed two earned runs in 18.2 innings pitched.
Mikayla Duke, a freshman from Marietta, Ga., went 6-for-9 over the weekend as she aided the Tigers' 4-3 win over Miami (OH) with three hits and two RBI. TSU's lead-off hitter,
Jasmine Brown, finished the weekend with back-to-back multi-hit games. The senior shortstop,
Lauren Farias, leads the team with a .455 batting average (10-for-22) while she's tied with
Brown (10-for-29) for the team-lead in hits. On Sunday against IUPUI,
Anayah Baker drove in two runs as the sophomore leads the team with seven RBI.
Get to Know No. 11 Oklahoma State (6-4, 0-0 Big 12): The Cowgirls traveled to the St. Pete Clearwater Elite Invitational last weekend and faced off against the top tier of women's college softball. OSU played No. 19 Michigan and No. 21 LSU on Friday, South Florida and No. 6 Washington on Saturday and Northwestern on Sunday. Both USF and Northwestern were receiving votes in last week's Top 25 poll. No. 11 Oklahoma State won 4-3 against Northwestern and defeated No. 19 Michigan 4-0 on Friday. The Cowgirls dropped three straight to No. 21 LSU, USF and No. 6 Washington. OSU's participated in the last two Women's College World Series ('19 and '21). Last season, the black and orange finished No. 6 in the national rankings. In 2022, the Cowgirls return eight starters from the WCWS squad. The returning All-Americans, Hayley Busby and Sydney Pennington, have started the year slow with identical stat lines, 6-for-27 (.222), through 10 games. Senior outfielder, Chyenne Factor, leads the team in hits (12), batting average (.414), home runs (4), RBI (7) and runs scored (9). Kelly Maxwell, a pitcher on the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Watch List, has registered a 3-0 record (0.61 ERA) with two runs allowed in 23 innings pitched, along with 41 strikeouts and seven walks.
Get to Know Texas A&M (11-0, 0-0 SEC): A&M returns seven positional starters, three pitchers and 13 letter-winners overall from a 2021 NCAA Tournament team. The Aggies are undefeated through 11 games and have not allowed a run in the last 10 innings as they've run-ruled Pittsburgh and Kansas in consecutive games. Last weekend, Texas A&M hosted an invitational with Missouri State, Stephen F. Austin, Pitt, and KU. They out-scored their opponents 42-to-7 in five games. Makinzy Herzog tossed a six-inning no-hitter against Kansas with nine strikeouts. Herzog, a senior two-way player, started in all 55 games last season. In the circle, the Florida State transfer is 4-0 in five appearances and has not allowed an earned run in 23 innings pitched. Herzog, a Missouri City, Texas native, has recorded 35 strikeouts, seven walks, three complete games and two shutouts. Senior standout Haley Lee leads the team with 19 hits in 29 at-bats (.655 BA). The catcher from Kingwood, Tx. has logged 13 walks, three doubles, two home runs and 12 RBI. KoKo Wooley, a freshman infielder, is second on the team in hits (17). Wooley leads the team in triples (3) and stolen bases (8-for-9). Rylen Wiggins, a sophomore outfielder, is tied for the team-lead in home runs (3) and leads the team in doubles (6).
Get to Know Texas Southern (2-6, 0-0 SWAC): The Lady Tigers enter the Reveille Classic on a two-game winning streak as they defeated Houston-Victoria in a doubleheader last Friday. Texas Southern is predicted to win the SWAC West by the league's head coaches and SID's. Senior pitcher, Naomi Reyes, was tabbed SWAC Preseason Pitcher of the Year after she led the conference in ERA (1.52) last season. In 2021, Reyes tossed 11 complete games, including three shutouts and a perfect game against Alcorn State. TSU led the SWAC with five preseason selections as Reyes and outfielder Tevanae Tate received first team honors. Graduate student, Julia Bilbao, leads the team in RBI (7) and batting average (6-for-15, .400), while she trails Pamela Richardson for the team-lead in hits (7) by one. Richardson also leads the team in stolen bases (4-for-4). Reyes has started in five games this year, owning a 1-3 record and a 7.04 ERA. The right-hander has allowed four runs or more in three starts.
