My Time in NYC as an NFL HBCU Fellow

Tennessee State University junior safety Josh Green participated in a 10-day NFL Student-Athlete Fellowship Program in New York City. Below is Josh's story about his time in NYC and having the opportunity to meet staff members from the NFL and New York Giants.

Dear Roar City,

This is Josh Green. I am a safety on the TSU football team, and I was blessed with the opportunity to be chosen to participate in the NFL Student-Athlete Fellowship Program in New York. Let me tell you a bit about my experience and what it was like to live in New York City.

In those 10 days, as a fellow, I had the opportunity to shadow different departments and learn about what takes place behind the scenes in the NFL.

During my first night in New York, I was amused and realized I underestimated the NYC traffic. That night was a night to remember; I had the chance to ride the subway for the first time and our host took me along with the five other HBCU fellows to dinner and then I got to experience Times Square for the first time ever.

The funny thing is, I told myself about an hour before dinner that I was never going down into a subway because it looked sketchy!

During our first week, the NFL executives made sure to keep us busy during the day. The work week started at 9 a.m. and ended around 4:30 p.m.

I had the opportunity to sit in on multiple meetings that allow me to see the importance of every level within the NFL. I was also able to sit down one-on-one with a representative of the finance department. We had a great conversation about many things within the finance world.

The best part was that we had an opportunity to interact during the meetings and ask questions.

Honestly, I felt very welcomed like I was already part of the team.

Towards the end of the 10-day experience, we were able to visit the New York Giants training facility, which was a great experience. During the visit, we had the opportunity to take a tour around the facility, meet with the multiple departments, and even had the chance to converse with their staff members. At the end of the visit, we ate lunch with new general manager Joe Schoen and assistant general manager Brandon Brown.

On one of our last days, I also had the opportunity to visit the NFL Films campus in New Jersey where I was able to ask difficult questions about topics like Hard Knocks.

Before the fellowship ended, I was given the opportunity to present to the NFL executives and other members of the league office effective strategies that can help push the presence of flag football in the 2028 Olympic Games. We had a great and successful presentation; they loved it and who knows, maybe some of our information can help achieve the ultimate goal.

While sending thank you notes and emails to the NFL executives I met, I sit back and thought that there are so many great things that I took from the trip that give me the blessing to pass the information on to whoever would love to take in the knowledge. The main thing that I heard throughout the whole trip that I will never forget is the importance of NETWORKING!

Networking is key to securing things that you want in the business world or life in general. There might be more similarities and connections in the room you are in than you would ever know if you do not ask.

It was good being able to connect with the peers I had in my group. I enjoyed being able to connect with my HBCU football fellows and even in the small group that we had (outside of the trash talking about the seasons), we were all able to enjoy ourselves because we all had similar mindsets and goals coming to this fellowship.

Finally, thanks to football chief of staff Dusty Bennett, head coach Eddie George, and the entire TSU staff for not only supporting me in the field but for guiding me towards a successful path off the field.

P.S. Good luck driving a car in a city that never sleeps.

Until Football Season…

Joshua Green
