Fointno Grabs OVC Weekly Softball Honor

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. -- Peyton Fointno's weekend was filled with accolades on and off the field.  The junior from Lawrenceville, Georgia, received her undergrad diploma on Saturday morning with Oprah Winfrey as the commencement speaker. She then went out and went 6-for-7 at the plate with five RBI in three games.

Today, she was named the Ohio Valley Conference's Player of the Week for the final week of the regular season. She received all first-place votes. Her walk-up song is "Superhero" by Metro Boomin. Her entire weekend brought credence to the song's title for all she earned.

"I like the song and its vibe," said Fointno. "I'm just trying to be there for my team, help us win, and do my best for them. Getting to walk across the stage was amazing. Oprah being there was special. I loved what she had to say."

Fointno has been on a tear lately. She drove in five runs in the 7-4 victory over Morehead State in Game 2 on Saturday. This was the second time in three games that she drove in five.  In the game, she went 3-for-3 and knocked in a run each time she had a plate appearance. On Sunday, she went 2-for-2 and scored a run. She has a hit in her last five at-bats.  Fointno is amid a four-game hitting streak in which she has raised her batting average by 39 points.

Fointno becomes the third Tiger player to earn a weekly honor from the OVC. Pitcher Caitlyn Manus and catcher Onnika Spencer were named pitcher of the week and player of the week after the season's first weekend. A move down in the batting order to seventh has seemingly been a spark for Fointno. She has hit safely in eight of the ten games since the move, raising her batting average by 38 points.

"It just shows the balance that we have on our team," said head coach Genee McRath regarding having three different winners. "Others were nominated during the season as well. Peyton has taken on the challenge since being moved down in the order. She has been big for us."
