NASHVILLE — Tennessee State linebacker Sanders Ellis has been named one of 25 finalists for the 2024 Jerry Rice Award, which recognizes the national freshman player of the year in Division I FCS football. The award, named after Pro Football Hall of Famer Jerry Rice, honors first-year players who make a significant impact on the field.
Ellis has been a defensive standout for the Tigers in his debut season, recording 76 total tackles (52 solo), 12.5 tackles for loss (52 yards), and 1.5 sacks (21 yards). He has also contributed with one fumble recovery, one quarterback hurry, and two pass breakups. His consistent performance played a key role in TSU's successful 2024 campaign, which saw the Tigers share the Big South-OVC Football Association title and earn their first playoff berth since 2013.
Some of Ellis's season highlights include an 11-tackle performance against Charleston Southern on Sept. 28 and a game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Sept. 14, where he posted 5 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks. His ability to disrupt opposing offenses has been a critical asset for the Tigers' defense throughout the year.
The Jerry Rice Award, now in its 14th season, is one of the premier honors in FCS football. Named after one of the greatest wide receivers in NFL history, the award has recognized future stars such as Cooper Kupp, Trey Lance, and Shedeur Sanders. The winner will be determined by a national voting panel and announced on Dec. 5, with the recipient honored at the Stats Perform FCS National Awards Banquet on Jan. 4 in Frisco, Texas.
Ellis's nomination reflects not only his exceptional talent and work ethic but also Tennessee State's resurgence under head coach Eddie George. As a freshman, Ellis has proven himself as a key player in the Tigers' defense and is poised to be a cornerstone of the program's future success.
