Women's Basketball Falls at Southern Indiana in OVC Opener

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Somah Kamara, Saniah Parker and Erin Martin combined to score 42 of Tennessee State's 56 total points, but the Tigers fell to the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles 74-56 on the road Thursday.

The Tigers (4-7, 0-1) had two players score in double figures, led by Kamara, who had 21 points and three steals. Parker tacked on 12 points, six rebounds and four assists and Martin added nine points and four steals.

Kiki Roberts pulled down five offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Tennessee State, grabbing 13 boards and turning them into 11 second chance points.

The Tennessee State defense was a problem in Thursday's game, forcing 19 Southern Indiana turnovers while committing 17. Those takeaways turned into 23 points on the offensive end of the floor. Martin's four steals led the way individually for the Tigers.

How It Happened

After falling behind 2-0, Tennessee State went on a 5-0 run with 8:25 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Parker, to take a 5-2 lead. The Tigers then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 16-15.

Tennessee State then started off the second quarter by going on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Lyric Cole, to take a 20-16 lead. The Screaming Eagles then came roaring back to take a 36-28 lead heading into halftime.

Tennessee State's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Tigers faced a 54-39 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Tennessee State knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 11 total points.

Southern Indiana kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 67-48 advantage before Tennessee State went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Jada Collins' three, to shrink the deficit to 67-54 with 2:16 to go in the contest. Southern Indiana responded and outscored the Tigers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 74-56. Tennessee State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 17 points.
