CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The Tennessee State women's basketball team kept Southeast Missouri State to just 15 percent from beyond the arc in a 3-for-20 shooting performance, but fell 48-47 to the Redhawks on the road Saturday.
Zyion Shannon led the Tigers (7-15, 4-8) with 17 points and three steals. Diamond Cannon added six points and three steals and Eboni Williams helped out with eight points, six rebounds and two steals.
Lyric Cole pulled down three offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Tennessee State, grabbing 13 boards and turning them into 12 second chance points.
The Tennessee State defense was a problem in Saturday's game, forcing 24 Southeast Missouri State turnovers while committing 16. Those takeaways turned into 20 points on the other end of the floor. Shannon's three steals led the way individually for the Tigers.
How It Happened
After falling behind 6-2, Tennessee State went on a 7-0 run with 7:14 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Shannon, to take a 9-6 lead. The Tigers then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 18-15.
The Tigers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 27-23 halftime deficit.
Following halftime, Tennessee State kept the Redhawks from growing their lead before going on a 10-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Kennedy Davis, to grab a 37-31 lead with 3:09 to go in the third. The Redhawks then rallied to tie it at 39-39 heading into the fourth quarter. Tennessee State played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 16 points in the paint.
Southeast Missouri State broke the tie, edging ahead in the game's final quarter and leaving Tennessee State behind 48-47 at the final buzzer. Tennessee State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring four of its eight points in the paint.
