NASHVILLE — Aaniya Webb collected 21 points, but the Tennessee State women's basketball team fell to the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks 75-68 at the Gentry Thursday.
The Tigers (4-9, 0-3 OVC) had four players score in double figures, led by Webb, who had 21 points and three steals. Lyric Cole tacked on a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds and Kiki Roberts chipped in as well with 11 points and eight rebounds off of the bench.
Led by Roberts' seven offensive rebounds, Tennessee State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 17 boards that resulted in 18 second chance points.
The Tennessee State defense caused its share of mistakes in Thursday's game, forcing 22 Southeast Missouri State turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 20 points on the offensive end of the floor. Somah Kamara's four steals led the way individually for the Tigers.
How It Happened
After falling behind 5-0, Tennessee State went on a 6-0 run with 7:50 left in the first quarter to take a 6-5 lead. The Tigers then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 21-16.
Southeast Missouri State kept adding to that lead, building a 30-21 advantage before Tennessee State went on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Erin Martin, to narrow its deficit to 30-27. Southeast Missouri State responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Tigers trailing 40-27 heading into halftime.
Southeast Missouri State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 46-31 advantage before Tennessee State went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Kamara, to trim its deficit to 46-37 with 5:56 to go in the third. The Tigers continued to reduce the Southeast Missouri State lead, shrinking it to 54-50 by the end of the third quarter. Tennessee State played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 23 points in the paint.
Tennessee State could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 75-68. Tennessee State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 18 points in the paint.
