Tennessee State is still searching for its first Ohio Valley Conference win of the season, but head coach Reggie Barlow believes his team remains resilient and ready to turn the corner. The Tigers return to Nissan Stadium on Saturday afternoon to close a three-game homestand against Lindenwood, with kickoff set for 3:30 p.m.

"New week," Barlow said. "You plan for a team, go out and play, then get an opportunity the next week to do it again. We're excited about another chance to compete here at home. It's always a pleasure to play at Nissan Stadium."

The Tigers (2-6, 0-4 OVC) came up just short last weekend, falling 17-16 to Western Illinois. Despite the loss, Barlow said he saw positive signs from his defense, which limited the Leathernecks to just two conversions on 12 third-down attempts.

"I thought the defense played well," Barlow said. "Our guys flew around and made great plays. It's good to see the development — guys like Jashon Watkins stepping in, and the secondary communicating the way Coach Dexter Jackson wants them to."

James Stewart continued his breakout year with another strong performance, entering the week as the team's leading tackler with 44 stops and 10.5 tackles for loss. Micah Gay and Byron Davis have also emerged as playmakers in a defense that's showing more consistency each week.

Special teams have been a major bright spot for TSU. Punter Mark Shenouda is averaging 42.4 yards per punt, while kicker Freddy Perez has converted 10 of 16 field goal attempts, including four from beyond 40 yards.

"Coach [Jerrod] Kruse has done a really good job managing our special teams," Barlow said. "He's a great communicator and very organized. Freddie and Mark are both having solid seasons, and we'll continue to lean on them."

Offensively, the Tigers have relied on the steady arm of sophomore quarterback Byron McNair, who has thrown for 1,024 yards and six touchdowns this season. Running backs Kendric Rhymes and Zack Simmons-Brown continue to lead the ground game, combining for more than 700 rushing yards and five scores.

One of McNair's emerging targets has been Connor Ruth, who has caught touchdown passes in consecutive games after stepping up when starter Jason Hoth went down with an injury.

"It's been exciting to see Connor's growth," Barlow said. "He's developed and battled through injuries. He and Byron have been able to connect a few times, and we look forward to getting him even more involved."

TSU showed improvement in key moments last weekend, finishing a perfect 3-for-3 on fourth-down attempts and converting all of its red-zone opportunities.

"We wanted to be a little more aggressive and sustain possessions," Barlow said. "That's a credit to Coach [Toriano] Morgan and Coach [Shannon] Harris for having the right play calls ready. I tell them to always have a fourth-down play available, and the guys went out and executed."

Lindenwood (3-5, 1-3 OVC) comes to Nashville with one of the league's more dynamic passing attacks, led by quarterback Nate Glantz, who has thrown for 1,818 yards and 13 touchdowns. His favorite targets — Jalen Smith and Rico Bond — have combined for nearly 1,000 yards receiving.

"Early in the week, it's about us," Barlow said. "We make our corrections from the previous game and then start game-planning for their personnel. These are the fun days — collaborating, watching film, and putting together a strong plan."

Saturday's matchup marks the third all-time meeting between the programs, with TSU holding a 2-0 series lead. The Tigers defeated the Lions 24-20 last season behind a strong second-half rally.

Now, as the homestand concludes, Barlow and the Tigers are determined to turn steady progress into results.
