CHARLESTON, Ill. — Tennessee State dropped a 31-7 road decision to Eastern Illinois on Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers improved to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in Ohio Valley Conference play, while the Tigers fell to 1-4 and 0-2 in conference games.
Quarterback Byron McNair led the Tennessee State offense with 205 passing yards, completing 16 of 20 attempts (80%) with one touchdown and one interception. Kendric Rhymes paced the Tigers on the ground with 11 rushing yards and added 30 more through the air, while Zack Simmons-Brown contributed 10 rushing yards.
McNair's top target was Snap Reed, who hauled in four receptions for 52 yards and a touchdown.
On defense, Marlon Huff recorded five tackles, including one sack and one tackle for loss. Sammy Taylor led the Tigers with eight total tackles.
The Tigers converted 50% of their third-down attempts (5-of-10) and held Eastern Illinois to 339 total yards of offense.
How It Happened
Eastern Illinois jumped out to a 24-0 lead before Tennessee State got on the board in the fourth quarter with a McNair-to-Reed touchdown connection, trimming the deficit to 24-7. The Panthers added a late score to seal the 31-7 victory.
