NASHVILLE — The Tennessee State women's basketball team went into halftime up by three, but eventually fell to Lindenwood 81-70 on Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers (7-17, 3-11 OVC) had three players score in double figures, led by Saniah Parker, who had 19 points, four assists and two steals. Aaniya Webb added 15 points, nine rebounds and two blocks and Krystal Haddock helped out with 11 points and four steals.
The Tennessee State offense was very productive from downtown, making nine threes on 20 attempts. Parker was the most prolific shooter for the Tigers, draining three treys in the contest.
The Tennessee State defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Saturday's game, forcing 15 Lindenwood (MO) turnovers while committing 10. Those takeaways turned into 16 points on the offensive end of the floor. Haddock's four steals led the way individually for the Tigers.
How It Happened
After falling behind 8-2, Tennessee State went on a 6-0 run with 6:10 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Haddock, to tie the game at eight. The Tigers then proceeded to grab an 18-17 lead heading into quarter number two. Tennessee State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 18 points.
Tennessee State built that first quarter lead to 22-20 before going on a 5-0 run starting at the 4:19 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Erin Martin, to increase its lead to 27-20. The Lions cut into that lead, but the Tigers still enjoyed a 31-28 advantage heading into halftime. Tennessee State forced five Lindenwood (MO) turnovers in the period and turned them into five points.
Tennessee State wasted no time building on its lead, going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Lyric Cole, to expand its lead further to 36-28 with 7:49 to go in the third. Lindenwood (MO) responded to seize a 54-48 lead entering the fourth quarter. Tennessee State played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 17 points in the paint.
Lindenwood (MO) kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 77-55 advantage before Tennessee State went on a 12-0 run, finished off by Parker's three, to shrink the deficit to 77-67 with 1:28 to go in the contest. Lindenwood (MO) responded and outscored the Tigers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 81-70. Tennessee State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 22 points.
