Women's Basketball Falls 79-53 to Morehead State

MOREHEAD, Ky. –The Tennessee State women's basketball team got a 20-point performance from the bench, but fell 79-53 to the Morehead State Eagles on the road Saturday at Johnson Arena.

The Lady Tigers (4-21, 3-13) had two players score in double figures, led by Somah Kamara, who had 18 points, six rebounds and four steals. Amiyah Ferguson tacked on 11 points, including three 3-pointers, while Aaniya Webb added nine points and three steals. Kiki Roberts pulled down a team-high seven rebounds and Erin Martin contributed five boards and two assists.

Tennessee State's defense held Morehead State to only 37.9 percent shooting from the field and forced 14 turnovers while recording seven blocks.

How It Happened

Tennessee State struggled out of the gate, shooting just 1-for-11 in the opening quarter and falling behind 19-3 at the end of the first quarter.

The Lady Tigers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 41-21 halftime deficit despite shooting 46.2 percent in the period and getting multiple baskets from Ferguson and Webb.

Morehead State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 54-29 advantage before Tennessee State went on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Kamara, to trim its deficit to 54-37 with 2:45 to go in the third. The Lady Tigers continued to reduce the Morehead State lead, shrinking it to 57-41 by the end of the third quarter. Tennessee State played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 20 points in the paint during the period while also converting 10 free throws.

Tennessee State could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 79-53. Tennessee State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring six of its 12 points in the paint while the Eagles finished the game with a 38-32 rebounding advantage.
