CHARLESTON, Ill. — Tennessee State produced one of its strongest offensive performances of conference play Friday evening, recording 11 hits and multiple scoring rallies, but fell 9-4 to Eastern Illinois in the Ohio Valley Conference series opener at Williams Field.
The Tigers (2-36, 2-23 OVC) wasted no time setting the tone offensively. Tennessee State struck first in the opening inning when Hailey Hunt delivered a two-RBI single up the middle, bringing home Alexis Woods and Noelani Wilkerson for an early 2-0 advantage.
Eastern Illinois responded with momentum in the bottom half, using a pair of home runs to take the lead, but TSU continued to apply pressure throughout the contest.
Offensively, Tennessee State turned in one of its most complete games at the plate this season. Woods led the way with a perfect 3-for-3 performance while scoring twice and adding a stolen base. Hunt finished with a team-high four RBIs on two hits, accounting for all four Tiger runs.
Dani James and Mariyah Brown each added two hits as the Tigers totaled 11 hits without committing an error defensively.
After Eastern Illinois extended its lead in the fifth inning, Tennessee State answered again in the sixth. Hunt came through once more with a two-run single to left center, scoring Woods and Wilkerson to cut into the deficit and keep the Tigers within striking distance.
In the circle, Tianna Salcido and Kristian Holder combined to provide steady relief work, limiting further damage and giving TSU opportunities late.
Despite the final score, Tennessee State showcased offensive consistency, defensive efficiency, and resilience against one of the OVC's top teams, matching Eastern Illinois in hits for much of the evening and continuing to trend upward offensively heading into the remainder of the series.
The Tigers return to action Saturday as the series continues in Charleston.
