Lady Tigers Start Slow, Cruise to
74-52 Win Over N.C. Central
The Lady Tigers of Tennessee
State University (2-4) shook off a sluggish start to cruise to a 74-52 win over
the Lady Eagles of N.C. Central University (0-9) at the Gentry Center in
Nashville, TN.
Junior forward Oby Okafor scored game-highs
in points (20) and rebounds (13) to notch her first double-double of the
season. TSU forward Jheri Booker tallied 14 points and guard Kendra Appling
scored 10 points to lead TSU in scoring.
For NCCU, Jori Nwachukwu scored
14 points, with Tonia Roundtree and
LaVonna Hailey added 10 points each.
The Lady Tigers out-rebounded
their opponents 39-23 and dished out 14 assists to NCCU’s five.
On the game, TSU fell behind 4-0
with 16:36 left in the first half, but chipped away at the lead to tie NCCU at
8-8 at 11:29 of the half. After ties at 10-10 (10:25) and 14-14 (8:46), TSU
went on a 12-2 run over the next 2:23 for a ten-point (26-16) at 6:33. TSU held on to a double-digit lead into
the half (34-23). The Lady Tigers scored 18 points off turnovers and 19 points in the paint.
It was more of the same in the
second half, with TSU opening a twenty-point lead (50-30) with 12:27 remaining
in the game. NCCU never got any closer the rest of the game.
In the second half, TSU score
17-points off turnovers and 21 points off the bench.
Tennessee State will host Belmont
University at the Gentry Center on Saturday, December 1st, tip-off
is scheduled for 6:00p.
