Tigers' last second basket fails
The Tennessee State University Tigers (8-11, 5-5) ended a
three-game home stand with a heart-breaking 65-63 loss to the Eastern Kentucky
Colonels (9-10, 6-5) at Gentry Center in Nashville.
Andrae Belton led three Tigers in double-figure scoring
hitting a game-high 19 points hitting on a 7-9 from the floor and 5-6 from
behind the 3-point arc. Gerald Robinson and Bruce Price added sixteen points
each in the TSU effort. Price also had a game-high eight rebounds.
Eastern Kentucky had four
players scoring in double-figures, led by Mike Rose (18) with help from Darnell
Dialls (15), Adam Leonard (13) and Justin Stommes (13).
Tennessee State took a 30-27 lead into the locker room at
halftime in a half that saw the score tied five times with two lead changes.
In the second half, TSU ran their lead up to seven points
(42-35) at the 12:47 mark, but the Colonels chipped away at the lead to gain a
tie at 57-57 with 3:14 remaining in the game. EKU pushed their lead to four
points twice, 63-59 (1:01) and 65-61
(00:13), but two Bruce Price FTs at 00:08 closed the score to 65-63. Gerald
Robinson's lay-up attempt with 00:02 remaining was rebounded by the Tigers and
the inbounds pass with :00.2 remaining was slapped away by EKU to preserve
their win.
TSU won the battle of the boards 29-28 and shot 44% (23-52)
from the field and 73% (8-11) from the line. EKU shot 50% (25-50) from the
field and 85% (6-7) from the FT line.
