Nashville --- In a contest that
seemed to have the makings of a three-set sweep, the Tennessee State
University volleyball
team saw a 2-0 match lead dissipate in a 3-2 loss to Tennessee Tech Saturday
afternoon in Kean Hall.
Tennessee
State fell to 2-14
overall and 1-4 in the OVC while Tennessee Tech moved to 4-12 with a 3-4 league
mark. The Tigers have lost their fourth straight match.
Neither team hit particularly well in the first set but TSU
was able to pull away down the stretch to claim the 25-20 win. In set two, the
Tigers used 19 kills and a blistering .439 attack percentage to claim the set
and extend the match lead to 2-0.
Out of the break, however, TSU struggled over the next to
sets only hitting -.067 in the third and -.023 in the fourth. This allowed TTU
to even the match 2-2.
In the fifth and deciding set, Tech jumped out to an 8-3
lead and never relinquished the advantage. TSU came to within three (13-10) but
TTU was able to hold on for the win.
Sophomore Shaquita Williams was solid for the Tigers turning
in a career best 15 kills (.333) in addition to three digs and three block
assists. Junior Santia Sanders also posted double-digit kills for TSU with 10.
Three Tigers registered double-figures in digs led by freshman Calasia Williams
(15) and junior Kamille King (13). Yamari Padilla Collazo tallied 11 digs and
43 set assists.
Amanda Lindgren led Tennessee Tech with 16 kills while Leah
Meffert added 15 and Marie Peddicord chipped in12. Meffert and Katie Kenline
each tallied a match-high 22 digs apiece as Teresa Craig (11) and Melanie Culp
(10) also notched double-digits in digs.
As a team, Tennessee
State .157 for the match and tallied 53 kills. Tennessee Tech turned in a .281
attack percentage and recorded 61 put aways. TTU held the advantage in team
blocks with 10 compared to TSU's five.
Tennessee State volleyball returns to action next Tuesday,
Oct.6 with a match-up against OVC opponent Morehead State.
Match time is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Kean Hall.
