Nashville --- The Tennessee State University women's basketball team picked up its first win of the season Wednesday night by defeating Cumberland, 60-42, in the Gentry Center.

Tennessee State (1-3) shot 35 percent from the field (23-of-64) and 25 percent from three-point range (3-of-12). TSU still struggled from the free-throw line, only connecting on 11-of-21 for 52 percent.

Cumberland (3-3) shot a dismal 25 percent from the floor (13-of-52) and 18 percent from beyond the arc (2-of-11).

Obiageli Okafor recorded her second double-double of the year with a game-high 17 points and 10 rebounds while LaDona Pierce dished out a game best eight assists.

The game got off to a slow start as the score was only 2-1, in favor of the visitors, at the first media timeout. TSU used a small run to go ahead 11-4 and later increased the lead to 19-10 with 4:01 left in the half.

Cumberland cut the deficit down to three after outscoring Tennessee State 8-3 to close out the half. TSU held a slight 22-19 lead at the break.

Five unanswered points to start the second frame moved TSU ahead 27-19. Holding a 31-25 lead, TSU outscored CU 10-3 to extend the advantage to 41-28. TSU grabbed its biggest lead of the game (46-30) when Meredith Stafford nailed a triple from the corner and Simone Hopes followed with a bucket in the paint.

TSU maintained a double-digit lead for the rest of the game.   

Tennessee State will return to action on Saturday with a match-up against cross town Lipscomb at 7 p.m. in the Gentry Center.
