Nashville --- The Tennessee State University women's basketball team fell to SEC member Vanderbilt, 84-47, Sunday afternoon at Memorial Gymnasium.

Senior Oby Okafor recorded a double-double to lead Tennessee State (3-7) with a team-high 14 points to go along with 10 rebounds.

Vanderbilt (10-1) had four players to score in double-figures led by Merideth Marsh's 24 points. Hannah Tuomi and Jessica Mooney each recorded 15 while Lauren Lueders added 10.

After nearly two and a half minutes of play, Vandy scored the first points of the game. Oby Okafor connected in the paint to even the score before VU extended the lead to 7-2. A put back by Jasmine Smith made the score 7-4 but that would be TSU's last bucket for the next five minutes.

During TSU's scoring drought, Vandy swelled the lead to 22-4. Kesi Hess drained a three-pointer at the 10:44 mark to finally end the skid but VU continued to build on its lead. TSU trailed 52-20 at halftime.

Vanderbilt shot 60.6 percent in the first half while Tennessee State only connected on 27.3 percent of its attempts.  VU knocked down six threes in the first half (6-of-14) while TSU went 1-of-7 (14.3 percent) from beyond the arc.

Within three minutes of the second half, TSU cut the deficit down to 56-30 following a three-pointer from Meredith Stafford. That, however, would be as close as the Lady Tigers would get. The Commodores maintained a comfortable lead for the rest of the game. 

Vandy shot 52.4 percent from the field while TSU finished the game shooting 30.8 percent. Although, TSU tallied 16 offensive boards to VU's 11, the Commodores held the advantage in rebounds, 45-42, assists, 25-9, steals, 9-6, and blocks, 5-1.

Vanderbilt had 44 points in the paint while Tennessee State only managed 24. The Commodores also had 22 points off of turnovers.

Tennessee State will return to action on Wednesday, Dec.30 to close out 2009 against Belmont in the Gentry Center. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
