Normal, Ala. --- The Tennessee State University softball team officially kicked off the season by sweeping host Alabama A&M in a double-header on Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers (2-0) turned in two dominating performances, picking up a 12-4 win in game one before routing the Bulldogs (3-4) 14-0 in game two.
In game one, Alabama A&M captured a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning but Tennessee State answered big in the second, knocking in five runs to take a 5-1 advantage.
TSU poured in two more runs in the top of the third to stretch the lead to 7-1. The Bulldogs managed to score three more runs but it wasn't enough as the Tigers went on to win 12-4.
Brittany Webb went 2-of-4 with three RBI's and a homerun. Caitlin Eaton (1-0) picked up the win. She recorded seven strike outs in five innings of work. Eaton helped her own cause going 2-of-4 from the plate and knocking in a homerun.
Freshman Megan Hedrick notched her first collegiate win with the 14-0 shut-out in game two.
A single and a stolen base by Jennifer Culberson got things started in the first inning. The hit and extra base sparked a rally that would see TSU jump out to an early 4-0 lead.
The Tigers scored another run in the third before an onslaught of eight runs in the fourth. Bridget Metzger led off with a single and reached second on a stolen base. She later plated following a double by Brittany Webb.
Goodman then followed with another double to score Webb before crossing the plate behind a hit from Caitlin Eaton. Five more Tigers would go on to score in the inning. TSU added one more run in the fifth to bring the final score to 14-0.
Jalisa Bradley (2-of-3) and Bridget Metzger (2-of-4) led TSU with three RBI's apiece. Eaton tallied three hits on four at bats.
The Tigers will next travel to Athens, Georgia to participate in the University of Georgia Tournament.
