Nashville --- The Lady Tiger seniors played their final game
in the Gentry Center Saturday afternoon, suffering a, 67-65, loss to
Jacksonville State.
Tennessee State (9-16, 6-10 OVC) got off to a sluggish first
half start and trailed Jacksonville State (9-18, 6-11 OVC) 39-29 at the break.
TSU fell behind by as many as 16 points before forging a comeback. With the
Lady Tigers down 67-65 and the clock ticking down TSU's shot attempt bounced
out of the rim with three seconds and JSU came away with the rebound.
Meredith Stafford led four double-digit scorers with 16 points
while grabbing nine rebounds. Nikki Rumph added 12 while Oby Okafor also just
missed a double-double with 11 points and nine boards. Simone Hopes chipped in
10 points.
Danielle Vaughn recorded a double-double for JSU with 16
points and 16 rebounds while Brittany Wiley and Destiny Lane each tallied 13
apiece.
At the 11:01 mark, TSU trailed 53-43, when a three-pointer
by Meredith Stafford sparked a 13-3 run that knotted the game at 56. TSU took
its first lead of the half, 58-56, on a lay-up from Stafford but JSU answered
right back and tied the game.
With the Lady Tigers down 67-63, Nikki Rumph scored to bring
TSU to within two with 14 seconds left. On
the ensuing possession, Rumph forced a JSU turnover, giving TSU the ball back
with eight seconds remaining.
TSU's final shot attempt, however, was off the mark.
TSU finished the game
26-of-75 (34.7 percent) from the field, including 2-of-11 (18.2 percent) from
three-point range. JSU was 24-of-63 (38.1 percent) from the field and 5-of-14
(35.7 percent) from beyond the arc. The Lady Tigers shot 50 percent (11-of-22)
from the charity stripe while the Gamecocks knocked down 63.6 percent
(14-of-22) of their free-throws.
The Lady Tigers will hit the road next week when they travel
to Cape Girardeau, Mo. to face the Redhawks of Southeast Missouri on Thursday,
Feb.25. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
