Auburn, Ala. --- The Tennessee State University softball
team defeated Alabama State, 4-1, after dropping a 9-1 decision to Auburn
Friday evening at the War Eagle Classic.
TSU scored four runs on five hits while Alabama State
tallied four hits and committed two errors.
Hannah Schnebly (2-2) picked up her second win of the season
while Caitlin Eaton picked up the save for TSU. Schnebly faced 21 batters and
only gave up four hits and threw six strikeouts in the contest.
Eaton was 2-for-3 at the plate with one run and an
RBI. Kelly Troglin and Schnebly also recorded an RBI.
TSU grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first after
Metzger and Eaton crossed the plate.
Metzger walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Tamara Perkins. Two batters later, Caitlin Eaton doubled to right field to
bring in Metzger. Eaton later scored after advancing on an illegal pitch and a fielding
error by the shortstop.
Alabama State scored a run in the top of the fourth but TSU
added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to increase the
advantage to 4-1.
TSU hit .238 against Alabama State and improved to 3-8 on
the season with the win.
Auburn turned in nine runs on 10 hits despite committing
four errors while Tennessee State tallied five hits and three miscues in the
game.
Bridget Metzger, Jalisa Bradley, Tamara Perkins and Troglin each recorded hits for the Tigers, who tallied three doubles and a
triple in the game.
Metzger went 2-for-4 at the plate and recorded her
fifth double of the season. Bradley and Kelly also registered
doubles while Perkins had a triple and scored TSU's only run of the
contest.
Eaton (0-3) surrendered seven hits and two walks in
the loss. Schnebly also saw action from the mound only allowing one hit
and a walk in three innings pitched.
TSU fell behind 4-0
after Auburn posted runs in the second and fourth innings.
The Tigers finally got on the board in the bottom of the
fourth. Perkins tripled to right field before she crossed the plate on an RBI
double by Bradley. That would be TSU's only run of the game.
Auburn tacked on five more runs in the top of the seventh to
make the score 9-1. In the bottom of the frame, Tedra Alford advanced to second
on a single by Metzger but was left stranded on base when the game
ended.
As a team, the Tigers had a .179 batting average and a .357
slugging percentage against Auburn.
The Tigers will continue play at the War Eagle classic
tomorrow with a match-up against Valparaiso. Game time is slated for 12:30 p.m.
