Clarksville, Tenn. --- In an Ohio Valley Conference battle
between Tennessee State and Austin Peay, the Lady Govs got the best of the Tigers, 2-1, in a crucial
game that came down to the final inning.
The Lady Govs (14-25, 6-8 OVC), who claimed the series 2-1,
only tallied five hits and two runs in the game but it was enough to drop Tennessee
State to 10-25 (5-9 OVC).
Eaton allowed just four
hits and struck out nine but the Tiger offense was only able to muster
one run off of seven hits against Lady Govs ace Morgan Brewer, who improved to
10-7.
The teams were scoreless through the first four and a half
with the Tigers putting runners on base in all except the first inning.
The Tigers came close to taking the lead in the fourth after
Jalisa Bradley led off with a single through the right side then moved over to
third on a sacrifice bunt and a fly ball. The Tigers, unfortunately, were
unable to break through as the next batter lined out to third base to keep the
game scoreless.
Austin Peay posted the first run of the game in the bottom
of the fifth. A lead off single, a sacrifice bunt and a ground out placed a
runner on third for APSU. Moments later, a hit towards second base took a crazy
hop and allowed the Lady Govs to capture a 1-0 lead.
TSU, however, answered in the sixth to pull even with APSU.
Bridget Metzger reached first and made it all the way to second on a throwing
error by the pitcher. After Tamara Perkins reached on a fielder's choice,
Brittany Webb singled up the middle to score Metzger and tie the game, 1-1.
The Tigers threatened again in the seventh with a runner on
second and only one out but came up short. Jalisa Bradley recorded her third
hit of the game and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt but Brewer retired
the next two batters to keep the game knotted heading into the bottom of the frame.
In the bottom of the seventh, Caitlin Eaton struck out the
first batter before giving up a double to put the winning run on second. Eaton,
however, was able to hold firm and retire the next two batters to force extra
innings.
TSU wasn't able to score in the top of the eighth despite
getting a runner on base.
A lead off walk in the bottom of the eighth to put the
winning run on first for APSU before Megan Hedrick came in to relieve Eaton. Another walk, followed by a fly out to center
field moved the Lady Gov runner to third with only one out.
A few moments later, an intentional walk to Shine Huwe loaded
the bases for Austin Peay before Catie Cozart singled to right field to score
the winning run.
Jalisa Bradley was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate while
Brittany Webb went 2-for-4 and recorded the Tigers' only RBI of the game.
TSU returns to action this weekend with a three-game series
against Tennessee Tech at Tiger Field. Saturday's doubleheader will kick-off at
12 p.m. with Sunday's single game scheduled for a 12 p.m. start.
