Nashville --- The Tennessee State University softball team
scored three runs in the seventh inning to move past Tennessee Tech, 4-3, and
pick up a crucial Ohio Valley Conference win Sunday afternoon at Tiger Field.
TSU (11-27, 6-11 OVC) fought back from a two-run deficit
late in the game to rally past Tech (18-25, 7-10 OVC) and capture the win. The
Tigers avoided the sweep but the Golden Eagles claimed the series 2-1.
Tennessee Tech scored the game's first run in the fourth
inning before increasing its lead to 2-0 behind another run in the fifth. TSU
cut the TTU lead in half in the bottom half of the fifth after Tamara Perkins
doubled down the left field line to plate Kara Murr all the way from first base.
The Golden Eagles lead went back up to 3-1 after
Samantha Everett hit a solo homerun to left field in the top of the seventh.
In the bottom of the seventh, with one out, Kara Murr
reached on a walk. She advanced to second when Tamara Perkins notched her third
hit of the game. With runners on first and second, Brooke Blackford stepped up
to the plate and smashed a double to left center to score Murr and Perkins and
knot the game 3-3.
With still only one out in the inning and a runner on
second, the next batter, Bridget Metzger knocked a single to left center to
drive in the winning run.
Tamara Perkins had a stellar performance for TSU going
3-of-4 at the plate with two doubles. She also scored a run and had one RBI for
the Tigers. Bridget Metzger went 2-of-4 while Brooke Blackford, Jalisa Bradley
and Kara Murr also recorded hits in the contest.
Hannah Schnebly (6-6) picked up the win for TSU while
Whitney Cummings (0-2) was tagged with the loss for Tech.
Callie Schmidt led the Golden Eagles with two hits and one
RBI.
Next, the Tigers will face Middle Tennessee State in
non-conference action on Wednesday in a doubleheader.
