Cookeville, Tenn. --- The Tennessee State University
volleyball team dropped a tough, 3-2, decision to Tennessee Tech Friday night
on the road.
The loss ended the Tigers' three-game win streak and moved
TSU to 7-5 (3-2 OVC). The Golden
Eagles picked up their first conference win of the season and improved to 2-13
(1-4 OVC).
The set scores were: 25-23, 23-25, 22-25, 25-16, 12-15.
After falling behind two sets to one, Tennessee State used a
strong fourth set even the match and force a deciding frame.
The high-energy filled fifth set featured nine ties and five
lead changes.
A kill by Danielle Howell gave the Tigers a slight, 6-4,
lead but the Golden Eagles evened the score at 7-all. TSU went ahead, 10-9,
following a service ace from Britani Hathorn but Tech knotted the game once
again. With the score at an 11-11 deadlock TTU posted two straight points to
take a 13-11 lead.
A kill by Shaquita Williams pulled TSU to within one, 13-12,
but back-to-back blocks from the Golden Eagles sealed the win for TTU.
Terakka Walker registered a double-double with 18 kills and
17 digs while Shaquita Williams also tallied 18 kills for the Tigers. Danielle
Howell (11) and Rebecca Moudree (10) also posted double-figures in kills.
Britani Hathorn paced the TSU defense with 20 digs while
Erika Moss added 12.
Natalie Penrod, Ellen Conti and Elise Robertson each
recorded 12 kills for Tennessee Tech.
As a team, TSU notched 68 kills behind a .168 hitting
percentage while Tech hit .173 and registered 48 kills. The Tigers also held
advantage in digs, 69-63.
TSU returns to action tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. at
Jacksonville State.
