Nashville, Tenn.--- The Tennessee State University women's basketball
team won its second straight with a, 78-48, victory over Cumberland University
Saturday night in the Gentry Center.
Jasmin Shuler led TSU (2-2) in scoring with 20 points while
Tayla Foster tallied 13 points and led the Lady Tigers with six rebounds. Kesi
Hess knocked down 4-of-9 from three-point range and finished the game with 12
points.
Jessica Pace was the only Cumberland (1-5) player to post
double-digits with 10 points and nine rebounds.
TSU shot a scorching 50.8 percent (33-of-65) from the field,
including 36.4 percent (8-of-22) from three-point range. The Lady Tigers held
the Bulldogs to just 36.7 percent from the field and 25.0 percent from long
distance.
The Lady Tigers held the advantage in rebounds, 40-32,
assists, 20-8 and steals, 13-8. Additionally, TSU only committed 13 turnovers
in the contest while CU registered 23.
The opening minutes were low scoring for both teams as TSU
led, 9-8, at the second media timeout. TSU went ahead, 14-10, when Rachel Allen
nailed a three-pointer at the 8:16 mark. On the Lady Tiger's next trip down the
floor Destiney Gaston connected in the paint to spark an 8-0 rally that put TSU
on top, 22-10, and forced a Cumberland timeout.
With 3:41 remaining in the half, Jasmin Shuler nailed a
triple from the top of the key to ignite a 12-4 run that put TSU on top, 38-20,
at the break.
A couple of empty possessions by the Lady Tigers led to the
Bulldogs cutting the deficit down to 15 early in the second half. Eight
unanswered points from the Lady Tigers, however, made the score 48-25 in favor
of the home team.
TSU stretched the advantage to 68-38 with eight minutes left
before cruising to the 78-48 victory.
The Lady Tigers will conclude their three-game home stand on
Tuesday, Nov. 22 when they host Southern Illinois. Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m. in
the Gentry Center.
