Clarksville, Tenn. --- The Tennessee State University softball team
picked up a, 1-0, win over Austin Peay before falling to the Lady Govs, 8-0, in
game two Thursday night.
Tennessee State (8-28, 2-10 OVC) snapped a 10-game losing
skid by defeating Austin Peay (7-23, 2-8 OVC) in the opener. Caitlin Eaton
pitched a one-hitter while Jalisa Bradley recorded her third homerun of the
season to push TSU to the 1-0 win.
The Tigers struggled in game two as the Lady Govs used
strong second and third innings to open up the lead. TSU only managed to post
four hits while registering three errors in the losing effort.
Game One
Caitlin Eaton (5-11) picked up her fifth win of the season
while Lauren de Castro (0-6) was charged with the loss for Austin Peay.
Offensively, Eaton went 2-of-3 at the plate while Tedra Alford,
Jalisa Bradley and Kelly Troglin also recorded hits for TSU.
After falling behind in the count Jalisa Bradley smacked a
long ball to left field and gave TSU a 1-0 lead in the top of the second.
Despite committing an error in the bottom of the second
inning, Caitlin Eaton and the TSU defense were solid through the first four frames.
Austin Peay's first hit of the game did not come until the fifth.
In the fifth frame, the Lady Govs were able to get a runner
in scoring position following a hit and a sacrifice bunt but Eaton was able to
get out of the inning without any runs scoring.
TSU had a couple of chances to add to its lead in the top of
the sixth and seventh innings after loading the bases with only one out in both
frames. The Tigers were not able to capitalize.
One run, however, would prove to be enough as Caitlin Eaton
retired three straight APSU batters in the bottom of the seventh to secure the
win for TSU.
Tennessee State finished the game with five hits and one
error while Austin Peay had one hit and two errors.
Game Two
The Austin Peay bats came alive in the second game as the
Lady Govs tallied eight hits off eight runs in the contest. Tennessee State
finished the game with four hits and three errors.
Kelly Troglin (2-9) was charged with the loss while Morgan
Brewer (5-8) earned the win for APSU.
Austin Peay got on the board in the bottom of the second when
Morgan Brewer hit a two-run homer to left field. Later, a couple of errors
extended the inning and led to the Lady Govs scoring another run.
A double down the left field line scored yet another run and
made APSU's lead, 4-0, before Caitlin Eaton returned to the circle to relieve
Kelly Troglin.
The Lady Govs posted one more run behind a sacrifice fly
before the inning ended.
Another two-run homerun saw the APSU lead go up to, 7-0, in
the bottom of the third.
The Tigers threatened in a few innings but never managed to
get anything going.
After APSU loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth, a
single to left field made the score 8-0 and ended the game due to the mercy
rule.
The Tigers return to action this weekend with a three-game
series versus Eastern Kentucky. The first game of Saturday's doubleheader is
scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Tiger Field.
