Nashville --- The Tennessee State University softball team dropped
a 12-7 decision to Eastern Kentucky in the series finale Sunday afternoon at
Tiger Field.
Tennessee State (9-30, 3-13 OVC) used a four-run sixth
inning to rally from behind but it wasn't enough as Eastern Kentucky (21-13,
8-7 OVC) used 14 hits to claim the series, 2-1.
Caitln Eaton (6-12) was charged with the loss for TSU while
Kristin Perry (8-4) earned the win.
Jasmine Brimm
went 1-of-2 at the plate and recorded her
first homerun of the season while Kelly Troglin
and Brooke Blackford
each
registered two hits apiece for TSU.
Raquel Howes (3-of-5) led EKU with four RBI while Ashley
Dollins (3-of-5) had three. Christina Ciolek went a perfect 3-of-3 at the plate
for the Colonels.
Eastern Kentucky did not waste anytime getting on the board
as the Colonels jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a two-run homerun in the first
inning.
In the next inning, the Colonels tacked on three more runs
before Olivia Gamache
came in to pitch for Caitlin Eaton
. EKU scored another
run to make the score, 7-0, before the inning ended.
The Tigers got on the board in the bottom of the third.
Olivia Gamache
doubled to left center and Jasmine Brimm
walked to put runners
on first and second. After Jalisa
Bradley was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Kelly Troglin
singled through the
right side to drive in two runs.
EKU stretched its advantage to 10-2 after posting one run in
the fourth and two in the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth, TSU answered with a run to cut
EKU's lead down to 10-3 when Brooke Blackford
drove in Jalisa Bradley
with a
double to left center.
After posting another run in the top of the sixth, the
Colonels moved ahead 11-3.
TSU continued to fight in the bottom half of the inning.
Brittany Davis
led off the frame with a walk. She advanced to second on a
sacrifice bunt by Olivia Gamache
before Jasmine Brimm
stepped up to the plate
and hit a two-run homerun over the left centerfield fence.
Brittany Webb
singled down the left field line to keep the
rally going before Jalisa Bradley
reached on a hit-by-pitch. The Tigers loaded
the bases when Kelly Troglin
singled through the left side.
Brooke Blackford
singled through the middle to score Bradley
and Webb to pull TSU to within four, 11-7. That , however, was the last run
that the Tigers scored.
After a lead off hit by EKU in the top of the seventh, Kelly
Troglin came in to relieve Gamache in the circle. Troglin nearly got out of the
inning intact but an untimely error allowed EKU to score another run and make
the final score, 12-7.
Tennessee State finished the game with 11 hits and two
errors while Eastern Kentucky had 14 hits and one miscue.
The Tigers return to action on Thursday with a single game
against Austin Peay. Game time is slated for 5 p.m. at Tiger Field.
