Jacksonville, Ala. --- The Tennessee State University women's basketball team defeated Jacksonville State, 67-57, Saturday afternoon in Pete Mathews Coliseum.

With the victory, Tennessee State (6-10, 2-2 OVC) picked up its first road win of the season while Jacksonville State fell to 3-14 (0-4 OVC).

Tayla Foster led TSU with 14 points and recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds. Alana Morris registered 12 points while Jasmin Shuler added 11. Rachel Allen finished the game with six points, six steals, three assists and no turnovers.

Briana Morrow tallied a double-double for JSU with 14 points and 16 rebounds while Danielle Vaughn also posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 boards.

After playing to an 8-8 tie, the teams traded buckets over the next several possessions. TSU was trailing, 13-10, when an, 8-2, run put the Lady Tigers on top, 18-15, with 8:19 left in the half.

JSU managed to knot the score at 21-all before TSU used six unanswered points to go back up, 27-21. The Lady Tigers stretched their advantage to, 31-23, and forced a JSU timeout when Donyeah Mayfield nailed a jumper from near the top of the key.

The Gamecocks burned their second timeout of the half when Alana Morris found Mayfield under the basket to make the Lady Tiger lead, 33-25, with 1:06 left in the first half.

TSU went into the locker room leading JSU, 37-27.

Jacksonville State opened the second half with a 9-4 run to cut the TSU lead down to, 41-36, two minutes into the frame.

The Lady Tigers responded with eight unanswered points to make the score, 49-36, at the 15:07 mark.

Jacksonville State used a spurt to pull within seven points at the 9:06 mark before an old fashioned three-point play by Tayla Foster put TSU back up by 10, 56-46. An offensive rebound and put back by Foster on the ensuing play gave TSU a 58-46 lead but JSU would not go away.

The Gamecocks used an 8-0 run to close within four, 58-54, with 3:16 left in the game. The Lady Tigers maintained their composure and closed the game with a 9-3 run to secure the win.

Tennessee State shot 35.8 percent (24-of-67) from the field and 13.3 percent from long range while knocking down 77.3 percent (17-of-22) from the charity stripe.  

Jacksonville State only managed a 29.7 field goal percentage and went 0-for-8 from three-point range. JSU went 19-of-26 (73.1 percent) from the free-throw line.

TSU lost the battle of the boards, 58-40, but had 28 points off 29 JSU turnovers. The Lady Tigers also notched 20 bench points compared to the Gamecocks' seven.

Lady Tigers return to action on Monday, Jan. 9 at Tennessee Tech. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m. in the Eblen Center.
