Cape Girardeau, Mo. --- The Tennessee State University
women's basketball team tallied its lowest point total of the season in a,
50-39, road loss to Southeast Missouri Saturday night in the Show Me Center.
Tennessee State (8-16, 4-8 OVC) only had one player to score
in double-digits as Jasmin Shuler finished the game with 12 points.
Southeast Missouri (6-18, 3-8 OVC) was led in scoring by
Bianca Beck's 12 points. Beck was also the only player to score in
double-figures for her team. Brittany Harriel notched a game-high 15 rebounds.
TSU shot a dismal 22.4 percent (13-of-58) from the field and
11.8 percent (2-of-17) from three-point range.
SEMO didn't shoot much better, 29.5 percent from the field
and 18.2 percent from long range, but it was enough to pick up the win.
The Lady Tigers had 16 turnovers while the Redhawks coughed
up the ball 17 times.
Both teams opened the game with three empty possessions
before SEMO jumped out to a 5-0 lead. TSU finally got on the board on a long jumper
by Jasmin Shuler but the Redhawks stretched their advantage to, 7-2, before the
first media timeout.
Out of the break, the Lady Tigers erased the deficit behind
five straight points, including a three-point play, from Shuler. TSU took the
lead when Destiney Gaston connected in the paint but SEMO scored four quick
points to regain the lead, 11-9.
Alana Morris knocked down a 15-footer to pull TSU even
before a free-throw by Donyeah Mayfield and a triple by Kesi Hess gave the Lady
Tigers a, 15-11, advantage.
The Redhawks closed the gap and knotted the score at 15-all before
taking a, 19-15, lead behind an 8-0 run. Jasmin Shuler drove to the bucket to
end a scoring drought for the Lady Tigers but SEMO rallied off nine unanswered
points to move ahead, 28-17 with 2:09 on the clock.
TSU used four straight points to pull within, 28-21, just
before the halftime break.
The Tennessee State offense continued to struggle in the
second half as the Lady Tigers fell behind, 32-21, in the opening couple of minutes
of the second frame.
At the 13:11 mark, TSU had been outscored, 11-3, and fell
behind, 39-24, to the home team.
