Lady Tigers Continue Homestand Against Skyhawks

GAMEDAY
The Tennessee State University women's basketball team will continue its homestand with a match-up against UT Martin on Thursday, Jan.7. Game time is slated for 5:00 p.m. in the Gentry Center.
 
THE LADY TIGERS AT A GLANCE
Tennessee State is looking for its first win of the season on Thursday. The Lady Tigers are coming off a 62-37 loss to Austin Peay at home on Monday night. The setback moved TSU to 0-5, 0-3 OVC. 
 
The TSU seniors have been the early leaders for the squad. Taylor Roberts is leading the team in scoring with 17.7 ppg while Andreana Wrister is turning in 15.2 ppg. Jaden Wrightsell is almost averaging a double-double with 10.4 ppg and 9.6 rpg. 
 
TSU is averaging 53.2 points per game while shooting 32.2 percent from the field and 19.2 percent from three-point range. The Lady Tigers are 5th in the OVC in steals (8.4 spg) and 6th in offensive rebounds (12.8 rpg). TSU returned six letterwinners from last season and added seven newcomers to the roster.
 
The Lady Tigers are led by first year head coach Ty Evans.
 
LAST TIME OUT
In what was a competitive game through the first three quarters, TSU fell to Austin Peay, 62-37, Monday night in Gentry Center. The game featured five lead changes and TSU only trailed by three points at halftime. The Lady Tigers kept the game within striking distance until the contest got away from them in the fourth period. Andreana Wrister led TSU with 16 points while Jaden Wrightsell registered a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds.
 
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
UT Martin is 2-3, 1-1 to start the season. The Skyhawks defeated SEMO in the league opener before falling to the Gamecocks. UTM was picked to finish first in the 2020-21 OVC race. UTM has not played a home game yet this season. 
 
LAST TIME THEY MET
TSU could not sustain a fast start and ultimately fell to UT Martin, 88-71 on the road. Taylor Roberts led TSU in scoring and finished with a career-high 29 points. TSU led by 11 points in the first quarter but saw the lead slip away in the second period. The game was tied at halftime but untimely scoring droughts led to TSU falling behind by as many as 21 points. The Lady Tigers only scored 12 points after shooting 27.3 percent (3-of-11) from the field in the third stanza. TSU (18) nearly matched UTM (19) point-for-point in the last ten minutes but it was not enough to overcome the deficit.
 
SERIES INFORMATION
TSU will meet UT Martin for the 66th time in the series history with UTM leading, 36-29. The Skyhawks have won four straight with TSU's last win coming during the 2016-17 season.
