Women's Basketball Opens OVC Play This Week

Host Tennessee Tech on Thursday, Visits Morehead State on Saturday

NASHVILLE — Ohio Valley Conference play starts on Thursday in Nashville, as the Tennessee State women's basketball team hosts Tennessee Tech at Gentry Center at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Tigers will then hit the road to visit Morehead State on Saturday afternoon for a 1 p.m. central time start.

TENNESSEE TECH SERIES INFORMATION: Ohio Valley Conference play begins on December 30, as the Lady Tigers host Tennessee Tech at Gentry Center. Tennessee Tech holds a 61-13 advantage over TSU in the all-time series record and have won the last seven matchups against the Lady Tigers. The first meeting took place on Feb. 21, 1965. TSU lost the first 19 contests to the Golden Eagles before a win in 1994. TSU travels to Cookeville on Feb. 24.

Mackenzie Coleman leads the Golden Eagles with 12.0 points per game while Anna Jones leads the team on the glass with 6.1 rebounds per contest.

MOREHEAD STATE SERIES INFORMATION: The first OVC road contest rings in the 2022, as the Tennessee State Lady Tigers visit Morehead State on Saturday, Jan. 1 on ESPN+. Morehead State holds a 38-26 all-time series lead over TSU and has won the last nine meetings with TSU's last win coming on Jan. 11, 2017.

Morehead State is 1-9 this season and looking for its first D1 win of the year after picking up its lone win against Midway on Nov. 21. The Lady Tigers and Eagles will conclude the season series on Jan. 15 in Nashville. Heading into OVC play, Lauren Carter leads the team in scoring (13.3) and rebounds (8.8) per contest.

HATTER CHAMPS: After TSU's first contest of the 34th Annual Hatter Classic against VCU was canceled due to the COVID-19 protocols within the VCU team, the Lady Tigers came out and defeated event hosts Stetson, 60-56. Gia Adams led the team with 13 points while Alexis Pierce and Tatyana Davis each had 10 points in the win. TSU led by as many as 15 late in the contest, but Stetson made an attempted comeback late in the fourth quarter only to be stopped by Sierra McCullough's free throws with one second remaining.

NATIONALLY RANKED D: In his second season at the helm, Ty Evans has his Lady Tigers siting near the top of the NCAA leaderboard in steals, steals per game and forced turnovers. As of Dec. 28, the Lady Tigers are second in steals per game (14.6), third in total steals (116) and eighth in forced turnovers per game with 23.8.

SUPERB NON-LEAGUE FOR ADAMS: Gia Adams leads the Lady Tigers in points through the first 11 games of the season. Adams has reached double figures in nine of 11 games with her season-best to date of 21 points in a tough loss to Kansas City on Dec. 12. The rookie from Houston has played 20 or more minutes in all 11 games this season and has one double-double which she grabbed on Nov. 9, a season-opening win over Fisk.

IT'S TATY TIME: Tatyana Davis is making the most of her final season of college basketball with 12.8 points per game through 11 non-league contests. The Toledo graduate has reached double figures in eight of 11 out-of-conference games with a season-high of 20 points against Chattanooga. Davis is second in minutes played heading into OVC play at 27.5 minutes per contest. Only Gia Adams has more minutes played (28.4).
