Women's Basketball Set for Wednesday Morning Matchup at SIU

NASHVILLE — With just four non-conference contests remaining, the Tennessee State women's basketball team will travel to Carbondale, Ill., to take on Southern Illinois for a Wednesday morning meeting. TSU will be looking for its first road win of the season as they are set to take on SIU who is just 2-5 overall and 1-3 at home.

SERIES INFORMATION: This will just be the sixth-ever matchup between TSU and SIU. This will be the first matchup between the Tigers and Salukis in seven years, as the two squads last matched up in November of 2015, with SIU picking up the win. TSU is 1-4 all-time against SIU. The Tigers' one win against SIU came in November of 2010 as they defeated the Salukis 57-43 in Carbondale. TSU and SIU first matched up in December of 2001, followed by another contest the following December. The Two schools waited eight years until 2010 to play against followed by a fourth contest in 2011.
 
SCOUTING SIU: The Salukis come into Wednesday morning's matchup averaging 75.3 points per game while allowing 79.0. SIU's two wins came against Leigh (87-81) and Chicago State (115-57). SIU has three players averaging double-figures, as Ashley Jones (15.2 ppg) leads the team, followed by Promise Taylor (11.0), and Tyranny Brown (10.0). The Salukis are shooting 33.6 percent from behind the arc, with Aja Holmes leading the team (18-of-43).
 
20 GOES FOR 20x2: Erica Haynes-Overton had her second straight game in which she scored 20+ points in Saturday night's win against Lipscomb. The grad transfer from Kansas finished with 22 points in the win, which was six days after she scored a TSU career-high 32 points against Omaha. She is currently averaging 13.7 points per game along with 17 steals.
 
MAKING NOISE IN THE MUSIC CITY: Head coach Ty Evans pushed his career record against Nashville opponents to 5-4 after defeating Lipscomb on Saturday. The Tigers finish the season 3-0 against teams from the 615 after defeating Fisk, Trevecca, and Lipscomb.
 
DOUBLE DUTY: Lyric Cole collected the first double-double of the season for TSU as she finished with 12 and 12 rebounds in the win over Lipscomb. Cole finished with her first double-double of the season, which also marks the third of her career after finishing with two last season at Austin Peay. Cole's 12 rebounds match a career-high she set as a freshman.
 
SPARK FROM THE START: Four out of five TSU starters finished in double figures against Lipscomb on Saturday night. Haynes-Overton led the team with 22 points, followed by Gia Adams (17), Lyric Cole (12), and Saniah Parker (11). The four starters combined for 62 of the team's 74 points.
 
SHANNON STARTS: True freshman Zyion Shannon made her first career start on Saturday night against Lipscomb. The local product from Stewarts Creek High School played in 12 minutes, fishing with one­ point. Shannon has had a productive start to her TSU career as she is averaging 5.1 points per game, to go along with 15 steals and 11 boards. She has scored in all seven games, with a career-high 13 against Trevecca.
 
ALIVE IN THE TOP 25: The Lady Tigers find themselves in the top 25 of NCAA D1 programs when it comes to steals per game at No. 24. TSU is currently averaging 12.0 steals per game, which is tied for first in the OVC with Morehead State. Haynes-Overton leads the team with 17 swipes, followed by Zyion Shannon (15), Gia Adams (11), and Lyric Cole (10).
 
HARD IN THE PAINT: TSU has finished with 30+ points in the paint in each of their four wins this season, while they have scored less than 30 in each of their three losses. The Tigers finished with 34 points in the win against Omaha, 36 against Lipscomb while tallying 54 against Trevecca and 42 against Fisk.
