Women's Basketball Set to Host UTM for First Home Game of 2023

NASHVILLE — Coming off their first Ohio Valley Conference win of the season, the Tennessee State women's basketball team will play their first home game of 2023 on Thursday evening as they are set to host UT Martin. The Lady Tigers moved to 6-9 (1-3 OVC) after a nice comeback win against Lindenwood last Saturday.

SERIES INFORMATION: This will be the 67th all-time matchup between TSU and UTM. The Skyhawks lead the series 38-29. TSU has a 20-14 record against UTM in Nashville, while they are 8-23 on the road. TSU and UTM finished 1-1 against each other last season with the Tigers winning the first matchup in January, followed by a UTM victory one month later.  

SCOUTING UT MARTIN: UTM comes into tomorrow's contest with a 6-9 recorded which includes a 2-2 mark in OVC play. The Skyhawks have picked up OVC wins against Morehead State (63-48), and SEMO (77-58). UTM is 1-0 in Nashville this season as they took down Vanderbilt in early December. UTM is averaging 61.2 points per game while giving up 62.3. Sharnecce Currie-Jelks leads the team in scoring with 13.7 ppg, followed by Paige Pipkin (10.9 ppg), and Shae Littleford (10.1 ppg). Currie-Jelks also leads the team in rebounds with 6.7 per outing.
 
TWICE AS NICE: Erica Haynes-Overton was once again named the OVC Newcomer of the Week this week, while also earning the OVC Player of the Week honors. This marks EHO's third Newcomer of the Week award and her first Player of the Week honor. The Nashville native averaged 25.0 points per game, 5.0 rebounds per game, 4.0 steals, 1.5 assists, and she shot 58.6 percent from the floor in two games this past week.
 
ONE TWO-PUNCH: The Lady Tigers have two players that fall in the OVC's top five leading scorers, as Erica Haynes-Overton (14.9 ppg) is the third leading scorer in the league, while Gia Adams (14.5 ppg) is the OVC's fourth-leading scorer. The dynamic duo combined for 41 points against SIUE and 47 against Lindenwood.
 
FREE POINTS: TSU leads the OVC in free throws made (225), and free throw attempts (317). The Tigers have attempted 33 more free throws than the next-closest team which is SIU who has attempted 284.
