NASHVILLE — The Tennessee State women's basketball team got a 25-point performance from the bench on the way to a 73-64 victory against Southern Indiana at home Saturday.
The Tigers (10-20, 6-14 OVC) had three players score in double figures, led by Aaniya Webb, who had 17 points and six rebounds. XaiOnna Whitfield tacked on 15 points from the bench and Saniah Parker helped out with 12 points, eight rebounds and three steals.
The Tennessee State offense was strong from three-point land, making nine threes on 28 attempts. Webb hit five treys for the Tigers in the contest.
The Tennessee State defense held Southern Indiana shooters to just 37.7 percent from the field, including 28 percent from three-point range.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 10-8 advantage, Tennessee State went on an 8-0 run with 3:58 left in the first quarter to increase its lead to 18-8. The Tigers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with an 18-10 advantage. Tennessee State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 18 points close to the basket.
Tennessee State kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 6-0 run starting at the 9:46 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Krystal Haddock, to increase its lead to 24-10. The Screaming Eagles cut into that lead, but the Tigers still enjoyed a 33-30 advantage heading into halftime. Tennessee State was strong from deep in the period, knocking down three three-point shots to account for nine of its 15 points.
Following intermission, Tennessee State continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 44-40 before going on an 11-0 run to expand its lead further to 55-40 with 1:28 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Screaming Eagles had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Tigers still entered the fourth quarter with a 57-45 edge. Tennessee State's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled nine of the team's 24 third-quarter points.
The Tigers then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. Tennessee State took advantage of seven Southern Indiana turnovers in the quarter, scoring four points off of those takeaways.
