Sydney McGee's path to Tennessee State track & field has been shaped by consistency, curiosity, and connection. A Knoxville native who was born in Dallas, Texas, McGee has steadily grown into a trusted presence within the TSU program, balancing competitive ambition with a deep appreciation for team culture and personal development.
Growing up in Knoxville—just a few hours from Nashville—played a key role in her decision to attend Tennessee State. While surrounded by the energy of the UT Vols, McGee was drawn to something different: the opportunity to attend an HBCU while staying close to home. "I wanted to go to an HBCU," she said, "and TSU felt like the right place."
Her introduction to track came in seventh grade, sparked not by early specialization but by encouragement from her parents to get involved in a sport. Those beginnings were humble. One of McGee's earliest memories of track is practicing in a concrete parking lot in front of her middle school—a reminder that her foundation was built on effort rather than ideal conditions.
Since arriving at TSU, McGee has experienced significant growth as a distance runner. She credits her development to both the structure of the program and the people around her. One of the defining moments of her career came when she traveled to compete at the Penn Relays, an experience she describes as especially meaningful. "Being able to compete there meant a lot to me," she said, marking a milestone in her journey as a collegiate athlete.
McGee doesn't rely on rituals or superstitions before competition, preferring to keep things simple. When she does listen to music, it's usually Beyoncé or Leon Thomas. Her calm, composed approach reflects the way teammates often describe her—cool and steady, even in high-pressure environments.
Off the track, McGee's personality shines in quieter ways. She enjoys shopping and baking, hobbies that offer a creative outlet away from training and competition. If track hadn't become her sport, she believes soccer might have been her calling. Her favorite Nashville spot is Voodoo Gumbo, and her dream travel destination is Thailand. When it comes to entertainment, Dreamgirls remains a favorite, and if given the chance, she'd choose to share a dinner table with Michael Jackson, Michelle Obama, and Damson Idris.
For McGee, TSU Track & Field is about more than performance. "Being a part of TSU Track means being a part of a team that will help you and support you for the rest of your life," she said. That sense of belonging has been reinforced through team game nights—some of her favorite memories from her freshman and sophomore years.
Now in her senior season, McGee reflects with pride on her longevity and growth within the program. "I'm proud of the work I've done and how long I've lasted on the team," she said. Over the years, she's gained better judgment both as an athlete and as a person, learning how to navigate college life with confidence and balance.
As she looks toward the future, McGee plans to pursue graduate studies in marketing research and data analytics, continuing her academic journey beyond TSU. Within the program, she hopes her legacy is one of unity. "I want the team to keep their bond and keep practice fun," she said.
She credits Coach Rachel as one of the most influential figures in her development and cherishes the connections she's built with teammates during her final year. Her advice to those who follow is simple but meaningful: "Those who do what they're supposed to be doing will enjoy this the most."
Through steady growth, meaningful relationships, and a clear sense of purpose, Sydney McGee's TSU journey reflects the heart of Tiger Track & Field—where commitment, culture, and community move forward together.
