Haley Blades' track journey began long before she understood what the sport would mean to her. Growing up in Pompano Beach, Florida, her height stood out early — so much so that people constantly encouraged her mom to put her in track. At first, Blades wasn't sold. But over time, what started as reluctance grew into passion, and track became a permanent part of her life.
South Florida shaped Blades in more ways than one. She credits her hometown for its diversity, creativity, and sense of community — a place that breeds both talent and innovation. That environment helped fuel her competitive edge, first showcased when she joined the Pompano Xpress track team and began competing at just five years old.
By the time Blades arrived at Tennessee State, she was already motivated by hunger — the hunger to improve, to compete, and to measure herself against the best. What stood out to her about TSU was the standard.
"They were the most put-together and efficient teams I've run against in the OVC," Blades said.
Since joining the Tigerbelles, Blades has seen her hunger translate into growth on the track. One of her proudest moments came when she finally broke the one-minute barrier in the 400 meters — a milestone that validated her persistence and work ethic.
Meet days are sacred for Blades, guided by a routine she never strays from. A light breakfast, a required trip to the bathroom before racing — no exceptions — and prayer are all part of her preparation. When it's time to lock in, her playlist flips the switch, featuring tracks like "Wired to the T" by Dorrough or "Putting Ya Dine" by Monaleo.
Away from the track, Blades' personality shines just as brightly. She loves rodeos and horseback riding, has a deep interest in fashion, thrifting, and DIY projects, and says she'd be either playing basketball or modeling if she weren't running. Her academic path reflects another passion altogether — Animal Science — with career goals of becoming a veterinary technologist and eventually owning her own clinic.
Being a Tigerbelle means more than times and placements to Blades.
"Perseverance. Dedication. Motivation," she said. "Upholding Tigerbelle pride and standards while exceeding everyday expectations."
Now in her senior season, Blades approaches each meet with clarity and purpose. This year represents unfinished business — a final opportunity to reach her full potential and make herself proud.
"I haven't reached my full potential yet," she said. "I need to know what that feels like this year."
Blades credits her growth to maturity, focus, and a stronger belief in herself, no longer weighed down by fear of outcomes. She cherishes the competition, the meet-day energy, and the camaraderie formed not just with teammates, but with opponents across the sport. Coach Cheese has played a pivotal role in her journey, helping guide her through both the highs and the lessons.
Her advice to those who come after her is simple, but powerful: check your heart, do the work — and more — and trust your own pace.
As Haley Blades runs into her final season at TSU, she does so carrying the community that raised her, the hunger that drives her, and the pride of the Tigerbelles — determined to finish her story on her own terms.
