Softball Sweeps Memphis in Double Header

NASHVILLE--- Amanda Vaught threw 10 strikeouts to lead Tennessee State to a 4-0 game one victory over Memphis before TSU defeated U of M 3-2 in the second game on Wednesday afternoon at Tiger Field.

Jennifer Gregory was 2-for-3 for TSU while Royesha Goodman recorded two RBI's.

Gregory singled to centerfield then stole second base before Bridget Metzger walked to put two runners on in the bottom of the first. Brittany Webb grounded out to third to advance the runners setting up a Goodman hit to bring home two runs.

In the bottom of the 5th, Melanie Cruz singled and moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt from Jalisa Bradley. Gregory singled down the right field line to plate Cruz and put TSU ahead 3-0.

Tamara Perkins led off the bottom of the sixth with a double down the left field line. She advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Webb before scoring on an error by the Memphis second baseman. That gave TSU a 4-0 advantage.

TSU held on to win the game behind the pitching of Vaught (10-13). She gave up just four hits in the shut out and only walked two batters in seven innings of action.

Game two was scoreless until Memphis captured a 1-0 lead on a solo homerun from Kailey Kassner in the fourth.

Bridget Metzger broke a string of 10 consecutive batters retired by U of M pitcher Rayna McClinton with a single to left field in the bottom of the fourth. But the Tigers would leave Metzger stranded on base.

Tennessee State used two hits and a walk to load the bases with no outs in the fifth. McClinton walked the next two batters to score two runs for TSU before Jennifer Gregory sacrifice flied to score another run, giving the Tigers a 3-1 lead.

In the top of the 6th, Memphis scored following a hit and a TSU error but that would be U of M's last run as Tennessee State went on to win 3-2.

Weber picked up her second win of the season while Vaught recorded her first save of the season.

Softball hits the road to face Middle Tennessee in a double header tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
