Nashville --- The Tennessee State University
softball team dropped both games of Wednesday afternoon's doubleheader at Tiger
Field. TSU fell to Auburn, 10-0, before dropping
a 6-2 decision to Alabama
State.
Jennifer Culberson led TSU with three hits, two runs and a
hitting percentage of .600 for the day while Brittany Webb tallied a team best
two RBIs. Culberson also totaled three stolen bases.
Tennessee State fell to 10-11 on the season while Auburn moved to 21-9. Alabama State improved to 5-9.
In the first game, the Auburn
offense came alive in the third as AU tallied four runs off of five hits in the
frame to capture a 4-0 lead.
Auburn
added another run in the top of the fourth to increase its advantage to 5-0. AU
then opened up the game in the top of the fifth, tacking on five more runs to improve
its cushion to 10-0.
With Auburn
leading 10-0 in the bottom of the fifth, the game ended on the mercy rule.
Against Auburn,
TSU committed three errors and the Tiger pitching staff gave up nine hits.
Bridget Metzger and Melanie Cruz were the only players to record hits for TSU
while pitcher Caitlin Eaton (6-5) was charged with the loss.
TSU got on the board early in the second game of the day,
taking an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Jennifer Culberson christened
the inning with a single before swiping second base. Culberson later scored
when Brittany Webb hit a sacrifice fly to right field.ÂÂ
Alabama
State answered in the top
of the third with a three-run homer to capture a 3-1 lead. But the Tigers cut
the Hornet advantage down to just one run in their half of the inning when
Culberson scored for the second time of the game following another sacrifice fly from
Brittany Webb.
In the top of the fifth, two Hornet hits led to a Tiger
pitching change as Megan Hedrick came in to relieve Kelly Troglin. A little
later in the inning, with the bases loaded, another Alabama State
hit stretched the ASU lead to 4-2.
ASU added to its lead in the top of the sixth. With two outs
and runners on second and third, a single to left center put the Hornets ahead
6-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, Tamara Perkins got into scoring
position for TSU after a double to right center. But Perkins would be left
stranded on base.
The Tiger offense continued to struggle in the bottom of the
seventh as the deficit would prove to be too much to over come.
TSU recorded seven hits against Alabama State
but left six runners stranded on base. Kelly Troglin picked up her first loss
of the season.
The Tigers return to action on Friday when they host the
Gamecocks of Jacksonville State University on Friday. The first game is
scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. at Tiger Field.
